I bought a 1953 penny out of a junk box, written on the 2x2 is 1953 UNC $1.00 50% off = .50 my question is, is this a ugly unc or a ugly proof?

Hey,
I believe that it is UNC. If you look at the two marks under lincolns neck, they appear to be sharp, usually on proof coins they are rounded or not so sharp looking. I have about 30 proof pennies and all have softer marks than yours. Just my opinion.
