That is neat. What's the Sheldon number of that variety? I left the book at home.

(It's overdue for return to the library anyway- good thing my dad's the head honcho of the library! I can usually get my fines "fixed". LOL. But I mostly pay 'em anyway.)

Great pic of a neat coin. I don't believe I've ever seen that overdate before.

I don't see the 1800/79 the 7 and 9 looks like it's in the eight and first zero position like 1790.
    Anyway it looks neat image
  • I have never heard of that overdate before. Cool. Do you own it?

  • It's an S-196. It is the most common of the 11 overdates for that year. At the begining of 1800 there were six unhardened obverse dies left over from previous years. On was a type one hair die dated 1798 while the other five were type two hair dies dated 179 with the last digit left off. All of these dies were created in 1798 and left over at the end of that year but the very small coinage of 1799 meant that they still remained at the end of the year and had to be overdated to be used in 1800. The 1798 dated die was overdated and used to create S-190, 191, NC-5, and NC-6. Two of the dies when over dated (1800/179) left the 9 showing strongly in the first 0. The first of these sruck S-193, and 194 while the other struck the coin shown, the 196. The other three dies mainly only show the top of the 7 beneath the 8 and were used to strike S-194 and 195 (one die) while the other two dies struck NC-1 and NC-2 respectively.
  • Spooly...what's the grade on that coin. I've been looking for a book that explains how the older large cents are graded. Folks tend to me more lenient on these coins. Off hand I'd say an F but I bet the slab says VF.
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
