Sellers: What's the funniest deadbeat bidder excuse you have recieved?

danglendanglen Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭
I just got one from a buyer that bought one of my coins with "Buy it Now". His reason for not paying is that "I thought I was buying a handheld calculator". The longer I thought about it the harder I laughed. Had to share.

I had one use the BIN, then claim it ws a computer error. When I sent a Non-Paying Bidder notice to eBay, the buyer responded right away saying his son used his account to buy things while he was in the hospital and that he would pay. I sent him an invoice and never heard from him again. image

Then, of course, there's the classic, "The cat ran over the keyboard".image

You think that is funny? It has actually happened with me, and I've had to go and retract my bid.image

He has also ruined some of my snipes.imageimage

    (After my initial email)

<< <i>My house is being carpeted and painted because we had a flood and had water damage, so my computer was disconnected and ... >>

    (blablabla yadayadayada blablabla)

    << <i>...so I will send payment next week. >>

OK, no problem. Nobody's perfect, certainly not me- I understand. Things happen.

(two weeks later, after my second polite email):

<< <i>I'm sorry, the living room is still a mess and I guess I forgot with all that's going on... >>

OK, I'll let that slide. I get pretty disorganized myself, even without renovating the room. Please pay up, though, huh? It's been almost a month.

(one month after the close of the auction- my maximum limit of tolerance):

A third email to the bidder. No reply.

Blam. First neg I ever gave. He never posted a followup comment, either.

Another clown changed his email address, did not inform eBay or anyone else of this, and when I finally got his contact info and got him on the 'phone, he said,

<< <i>Oh, I never heard from you so I assumed you'd sold the item to someone else. I bought another, and don't need it now. >>

(This on a $200 coin.) I emailed the new address he finally gave me, and I told him I would excuse him if he reimbursed my fees, as by this time it was too late to get a credit from eBay.

    No reply.

Pow. The second neg I ever gave. I think this guy has since been NARU'ed.

Since then I have left only two other negs (both for deadbeat bidders, who never posted followup comments), and one neutral (for a seller whose product never reached me and who took his time explaining that the lost item was not his responsibility- I might have accepted this if he had stated up front that the shipping fee didn't include insurance). This is out of over 700 feedbacks I've left.

After posting a NPBA, the buyer has decided he might just want the coin after all, even if he can't use it as a "hand-held calculator". We'll see......

Actually, a coin makes an excellent handheld calculator. Both rely on the same binary logic ( 0 and 1 is completely analogous to heads and tails H and T). The only difference is that the calculator processes its 0s and 1s a little faster.image

Maybe the cat wanted the coin. You should take it as a sign

I would be willing to bet that cat could eat your keyboard in maybe a couple of bites!

    Just yesterday,

    I posted an 1877 NGC-58 indian on E-bay,
Buyer bought it now in the first day of listing
then wanted me to join paypal, so he could use his credit card.

I was pleased with the bid, But I have no intention to join pay-pal.

Had to relist, and eat some fee's

  • The only one I received was the old standard:

"I got a virus and my hard drive crashed. Sorry man, I will get it out to you." after I filed the NPB report about 2 weeks after auction close and several unanswered emails.

2 days later, he was NARU and I never received the payment. Never got to leave him a neg feedback, either. Grrrrr.

Yeah, it really bugs me when I go to leave a neg and find out the deadbeat has been NARU'd. But on the other hand, I feel like I've done a good deed when I file the third FVC request on someone and they get NARU'd. So I guess it balances out.

I sold a coin to a person and they said they sent a Postal money order. I never received the money order, but I told them if they sent me the receipt, I would send the coin anyway. They didn't send a reciept, they sent a money order from a local store. This took about 3 weeks for a $5 coin. image I would have sent the coin without payment if they could of sent the reciept. Oh yea, they had a zero rating--they had never made an ebay purchase before.image

  • It's happening to me for the first time ever, as we speak. I'll let you know how it turns out as soon as I get an excuse. It's been 6 days and I have yet to get a response from my winning bidder. What makes it so bad is he outbid a very strong underbidder on this particular auction, and caused another auction winner of mine to bid higher than she should have bid. image

Update 10/22. One more email sent and still no response.
I just put him on my blocked bidder list, thinking he might try to sabotage one of my remaining auctions in the closing minutes.
