Mint Procedure question

the subject of washes used by the mint during production has been discussed in a few threads, most recently about the sac dollar. do any members know of a source of information on this. namely the procedure and some type of a history of what they've done with the modern proofs, since 1936. anything would be helpful, whether online or in print. thanks.
