Peace collectors........

I noticed that PCGS has on it's price sheet a PROOF 1922 "Matte". First, what the heck is a "matte", second, how many are there and does anyone have a pic? Any background on how these came about?

Proofs come with high relief details (as seen on the 1921's) and normal relief details. The normal relief Proofs are extremely rare.

    Info
  • Matte Proof
An experimental Proof striking, produced by the U.S. Mint mainly from 1907 to 1916, which has sandblasted or acid-pickled surfaces. These textured surfaces represented a radical departure from brilliant Proofs, having even less reflectivity than business strikes.

    Here ya go.

Heritage has sold several and have good pics. Go to auction archives at Heritage and they have several examples that have been auctioned. In addition to Matte proofs, there are a couple Satin proof examples. If you want one, plan on spending about $30K for a Proof 64-65.

    Peaceman,

We sold three of those (all 1922, 2- NGC PR65 and 1 NGC PR66) on behalf of a client about two years ago! My reserach, based on the number that have appeared at public auction, as well as those that have changed hands through private sales, is that there are approximately 15 1922's extant. "Matte proof" and "Satin Proof" 1921's were also made. When I get back home from the coin show I'm at, I can provide you with a bit more information if you want it.
