Why are PCGS and NGC the only Services with POP Reports?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,970 ✭✭✭✭✭
It doesn't seem like it would be a lot of trouble. Why doesn't ANACS put out a Pop Report? Would it be helpful to know what and how many they've graded of the coins you're interested in?
How about ICG? SEGS?

Why is PCGS and NGC the only ones to compile and list this information?

Placid, I had no idea. That's the first, ever, I've heard ANACS has one.
    Makes sense!

I've also never seen it used in a quote by anyone- collector or Dealer.

I'm kind of wondering what good pop reports do anyway? They are all inherently flawed by the fact that coins are cracked and resubmitted regularly, meaning the populations reported count the same coins twice, thrice, etc. Another inherent flaw is that many people (myself included) own some nice coins and don't submit them at all...thus they are never counted.

The women of ACG can count to ten. The men, eleven.

Or, is that the other way around?! image

ACG doesn't want anyone to know how many ms70 grades they have handed out.....

Coppercoins: We all know that the Pop reports are inaccurate, but they do provide at least a general idea of relative rarity (and, they're all we have, anyway).

With so little (and flawed) information, I don't see how it's useful. It's like walking around in a mall, counting the people with blue eyes, and making an assumption based on that alone how many blue eyed people there are on the planet. In order for any gathering of data to be considered "information," it first has to pass the test of being reliable and valid. The pop reports are neither. They represent a small segment of a huge market.
