Unusual Sacagawea?

I just opened a Mint roll of 2000 P Sacagawea Dollars. I got one unusual one which is darker than all the rest. In searching the internet, I believe this is an experimental rinse coin. They seem to be more common in 2001.
2001 Experimental Rinse

I found very little on the 2000 Coin. 2000

Does anyone have more information on the 2000's? Other than SEGS, does anyone else grade these?

Unusual looking...sorry I can't add to the knowledge in this case, I don't know much of anything about sac dollars other than I wish they would spend better and make it into mainstream use. Looking at the example you posted, it looks like you could have something, though.

If you want to document this one and do believe it is the experimental rinse then send it to SEGS. They seem to have a handle on what it takes for these to qualify and what the "look" of these sould be.

I have a 2000 P and a 2001 P Experimental Rinse Sacs slabbed by SEGS. I also have a 2001 P Exp. Rinse slabbed by Global. 2001 Ps are not to rare, 2000 Ps, I have only seen 2, but there are probably more than that. I thought someone on the forum said that PCGS would slab them as Experimental Rinse, but not assign a number grade. I have never checked with them to be sure. The web site you linked to is one of my favorites for small dollar coins. Take care, mdwoods

  • Thanks for the posts so far.image

It seems to be a rather rare coin so I think I'll send it to SEGS to get it graded. I e-mailed PCGS about grading it and haven't heard back yet (3-4 days). Does it always take them that long? image

  • The 2000's experimental rinse Sac's were thought by the author of this article to be less than 10 known.

I don't know if that's still the case or not, though.
    Every day is a gift.
  • When you see the prices on these rise you'll also see many more made and enter the marketplace. They're easy to produce and ICG and SEGS are giving their grades and slabs away.
  • Thank you. I have seen that site. image

I have never found any reference to more than about 10 or so of the 2000s. I did send it into SEGS for grading and I'm hoping to also get some information about the number of them that they have graded. They seem to be the only ones who will number grade and recognize the experimental rinse, so I'm guessing they have a pretty good idea of how many may be out there.image

  • <<They're easy to produce...>>

What do you mean produce? My understanding is they are a mint error.
