Do you post on both this forum and the other, "across the street", NGC forum?

MarkMark Posts: 3,536 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, the title to this thread asks one question.

How about another question--if you do post on both forums, why? Why not stick to just one? And, if you do post on both, especially if you initiate messages on both, do you behave differently on the NGC board versus the PCGS board?

As for me, I do post on both, but I don't initiate messages on the "other" board. I'd be just as happy if everyone stuck to one board, but that's not the way it is and so I can live with that.

Thanks once again in advance.

It's the SOS so I haven't even read the NGC board in months.

I have an account on the other board, I have not posted there. I really don't like the layout of that board.

I go to both sides of the street. I do a lot of reading on each side, with not too much posting. I'm here more, but I've been here almost from the beginning, or close to it anyway. I've been busy lately, so I haven't been here or there as much as usual.
The best part about across the street is the interaction with people who work for ngc, and can offer substantial advice/input to specific grading/certifying questions. I mean, David Lange answers variety questions, on a fairly regular basis.
No offense to Carol, but who from pcgs offers any input here? I still like this board, but the professionals input over there adds something extra. To me anyway.

well said BigD5 and I like their registry layout better. I like the trivia contest and giveaways, except TDN and EVP stake them out.image

This board has the hussle and bussle of TimesSquare while the NGC forum has more of a quaint, townsquare atmosphere. Depending on the mood, each feels right.

I participate over there, partly because someone I am friendly with asked me to. It is much quieter (at times, too much so), but without the feuds that occur so often over here. One feature that I particularly like is notification by email when someone has sent you a PM. Try it, you might enjoy it!

One has a smooth Purring Engine and well the other just has a hard time getting Started and Sputters alot when Running. No Comparison and Never will be equals or even close.

Heck I even signed up on Day 1 over there and have been in thier Registry since almost Day 1. They Need Big Help. JMHO. image

You know I only go there to see what is going on when someone posts a thread like this one.
Got too much other stuff to do.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

I post on both. I like both, but I prefer the other place because I find it more relaxing, more informational and more fun. I also like the software over there, but that's not a big deal to me.

  • I go to both forums. I like both forums. The NGC forum, to me, is more conversational and less confrontational. The level of NGC employee participation with us collectors means a lot to me. They listen to us closely. They act on some of our suggestions, and explain to us why they can't implement some of them. They use us as a sounding board and ask for our opinions on how to improve their registry and their service. It is a bit "dry" over there sometimes, though I learn a lot.

On the other hand, the PCGS forums are a blast. There is a more diverse group of people here. Particularly with age. I love reading about the E-bay horror stories and the sleuthing some members here are so good at. The arguments, bickering and ranting CAN be entertaining, but become tedious pretty quickly but like most people, I love a good fight! There is more ego over here. Substantially more.

Being that this is a political season, I'll use a political analogy. The PCGS forum is like the Democrats - demanding, brash, loud, in your face. the NGC forum is like the Republicans - a little aloof, steady, polite, quiet, a little boring.

I dunno 'bout this... I think there's plenty of ego amongst the regulars at both places, but the ones here seem less secure with their ego. How else would you explain the constant bickering around here?

To me, over there == quiet, confident ego. Over here == insecure ego.

  • EVP,

I guess I look at confidence and ego as two different things. Confidence in one's self is unshakable, a calm measured faith in one's abilities, and has little or no need to be heard. Ego needs constant reasurance from others, is fragile, and needs to be endlessly advertised. Hmmm...perhaps I'm just saying the same thing?? Anyway, I think your assessment is correct.

  • I checked the other board at first when it was mentioned here. I think I may have posted once or twice. I just don't have the time to keep up with both so I stick primarily here, and it's sometimes hard to keep up here. image
  • I, too, am a one board guy.

  • I read both and post to both. Not as much posting over there as over here, though. I initially went over there when this board went down and just stuck with it. I enjoy the postings of both boards, but things are much more relaxed over there. Not so much arguing and negative posts. But that could be because there are many more people over here than over there and there may get to be the same down the road. Doesn't matter to me, though. I just ignore/skip over what I find offensive or annoying (usually image )

I went there when our board went down, a while back. Haven't been back much. It's quite boring there, imho.

I've posted on the NGC boards a few times. The NGC forums are not as active as the PCGS forums and I like the PCGS forums software better.

I read over there, but I haven't posted yet. Actually, I mostly hang out on Usenet in rec.collecting.coins.

Anyone have any other good coin fora to recommend?

  • Alot of PCGS members here post over on NGC, but most of the time they are the same questiion by the same poster. I usually stay over here, as there is more interaction, and saves time having to read the same question twice.

  • some of both, but i don't like having to scan 3/4 of the page to find where the threads start.

Yeah right. This place used to be more dead than the NGC forum on a slow day. The traffic over there has picked up somewhat. It's probably growing faster than this board originally did.

I go over there and like it a lot. There is more information there (less fluff). The interaction by their staff is great. Even had a question that you'd like answered by a grader? Post it there and a grader will answer. Have a variety you have a question about, post it there and their variety expert will answer it. Have a problem/question about customer service, post there and they will help you. This repeats with lots of topics over there.

Over here it is basically 99.99% users and .01% interaction with PCGS people. Over there it is probably 75% users and 25% interaction with NGC people. I personally like the access to them.
  • Real Life NGC Board Scenarios:

    1. Hey, I can't figure out how to get this online submission stuff to work -- within 24 hours, an NGC staff member walks me through the process.

    2. Hey, I think that you really overweighted the modern coins in a Type set, here's some E-Bay examples to show you value -- within 2 days, scores are reviewed by NGC staff and lowered to more appropriate levels.

    3. Hey, I think that it would be cool if you could add these features to the Registry.. -- within an hour, "yeah, that's a great idea, we'll get the programming staff on it." Within a week, the change is added to the system.

I went over there for a little while, but it was not my thing. I only have the energy for one board and I didnt want to get into the whole thing about my series being graded about a 1/2 point more strictly by PCGS over there. Look in the greysheet, the numbers tell the story on Merc prices, there are two different ones depending upon whether the coin is in a PCGS or NGC slab.

This is not an attempt to bash NGC, just my rationale for this being the one forum I have time for.

There's now no Littlewicher over here, right?

I wonder why these sorts of posters don't appear on the NGC board--I though that the architecht would give them at least a bit of rope before he removed them...

I spend most of time reading but most of my posting time is on the usenet group rec.collecting.coins. I come here when I get tired of reading the same opinions by a few regular posters over there. R.C.C is not as polite as this forum, nore are there as many posts in a day. It sounds like the NGC forum is even more subdued than this one; I'll have to find time to check it out again, since it's been a couple of months.
