  • Not quite a monster but it's still pretty Ken. Is it a 65 FB?

Very nice Ken. You sure do take nice pics. I'll guess 66FB.

  • Ken,

Are the marks by the lips and by the G in God nicks in the coin or on the holder? Also looks like there is something up with the obverse rim from around 8 o'clock to about 11 o'clock or so. Toning is nice (and you know I'm not usually a fan of toning).

All in all, I would venture to guess a grade of MS63FB. (I reserve the right to change my grade based on the answer to my questions/statements above. image) What's my prize for guessing right?

That is Die Polish. There is a Pretty Big patch of it right in the area you asked about. One of these days I will get a camera, or figure out, how to shoot a picture so this shows correctly. I did not even notice anything with the Rim. I will look again.

Good Eye by the way. image

    Ken,

My first inclination was MS65FB... but you really have to hold the coin. Looking forward to hearing what PCGS gave this one.

OK.. I guess I do not know what a Mega Monster/ Godzilla Toned Merc looks like by the responses on this coin.

Help Me now. I see all of these coins on Ebay going for Insane prices, and Heck I want into this Action. image How about this Next one. I think maybe it might qualify as a ....Hmmm.....Nicely Toned Coin. Or is it a Mega Monster/Godizilla that I could sell for Big Bucks ??

    image

    And the Reverse. image

You will Notice this Coin is Shot straight on and with Absolutely No Enhancement...( BIG LAUGH & SMILE )

Opps forgot something. Yes I will Rip You for $150.00 if you want to Buy this Coin. Hmmm.....I paid $16.00 for it.

Sarcastic...Maybe a little from some of the Total BS I have seen lately on Ebay.

    Ken,

I'll go out on a limb and say the '42-D is a 67FB coin. It sure looks nice to me.

The '40-P is a hard one to grade, with the toning, but the date looks a bit soft on the "40", and I can see a nick in the bands. It doesn't appear to be quite FB. I'll give it a 64.

    Hello Ken,

I see what labmom is talking about. I also see something similar on the right side of the rim from just above the T to just below the Y in LIBERTY. Looks like rim doubling or something. I also see the "nicks" she spoke of, they are pretty obvious. Die polish? Is that where you have a small spot of proof like field where the rest is satin? My grading record is not very good right now, and I'm a little wary of making it worse, but what the hey! I'm guessing the 42-D is 65FB. That 40-P I think is almost impossible to judge without actually holding the coin. Both obverse and reverse seem weak struck to me, so I'm guessing 64 also.

How come when I viewed this thread before I logged on, all the pictures came up unassisted, but now that I've logged on, they don't?

I don't care what it grades, I really like that 42-D. Now that's my kind of toning, soft pastels!

Pretty wide Range of Grades for this Dime. Its a PCGS 65FB Coin and I was pleasantly suprised when it arrived. Nice and Original, not one of the processed examples that are quite common. For sure a Keeper Dime that has been put into the Set. Grade wise I it really does not matter, I like it.

The 40P is one of my Raw coins that I Doctored up just because it gets old seeing all of these Suppose To Be Monsters on Ebay that people are getting Ripped Off on. image Please Beware.

    Ken:

You beat my post by an hour. I think your 42-D is so clearly FB, that if I claim I was going to say FB, you shouldn't disagree with me.

As for the numerical grade, why do you think it was a 65 and not a 66 or higher? Is it the nick in front of Liberty's lips (which is somewhat distracting) or the nick from the "G" in GOD (which is not terribly distracting) or is it whatever that is on Liberty's neck or is it something else? (Or is the coin simply undergraded??? image )

I just stated the PCGS grade. Believe me that if a time ever comes to Sell this Dime more than 65 Money will be asked for it. This just may be the best example of Under Gradeing I have ever seen. The Coin is Nice. I really cannot Pin Point why it was graded 65. Maybe the Dipped Flash was not there. image

    Ken:

I agree with your assessment of the coin. It's hard to see why your coin was only a 65.

You know, a meaningful experiment would be to submit, say 10 coins, several times to PCGS, NGC, etc. and keep track of the consistency of the grades. It would be interesting to see how many times out of 10 that coin came back as a 65, how many times as a 66, how many times Body Bagged (image), etc. It would be quite interesting to see how the consistency of PCGS compares with the consistency of NGC, et. al. One would wish that the results of this experiment would be published in The Numismatist.

Regardless, I think that if your coin was included in that experiment, it would come back a substantial number of times with grades higher than 65!
