How and When do you know your Coin Buying has gotten out of hand?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,975 ✭✭✭✭✭
My first hint was when I found myself bidding and subsequently winning, this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1387328922&rd=1

I've really got to stop. This is now getting ridiculous.
I hate to think of all the things my children will be saying about me after I pass on and they realize these are the coins I collected.

Have you had to "STOP"?! And, if so- how did you do it?
Cold turkey?

  • I stop every time I run out of money....

Then I end up with more "spare" cash and I am right back to building and improving my sets. Never an end till I am 6 ft under... then I will haunt whomever ends up with my collection to keep them busy improving their collection.

When I come home to find my wife nearly in tears holding an opened american express bill.
  • when my wife left me i started to wonder if my collecting was becoming a problem...when my dog left me i knew for sure
  • I know it's gotten out of hand when I find myself eating Ramen noodles 5 days in one week.

When you call your secretary from the road and ask her to check your "watch" list for a coin auction that's ending in a few minutes. Happened this morning; first time I gave anyone my ebay password (my wife doesn't know it for obvious reasons "why are all these auctions titled 'items I won' ?") I took a deep breath; I was concerned about the wrong auction to boot!

When you trade recipes for ketchup soup with a guy named Russ 3,000 miles away.

(And don't say "You had money left over for ketchup?)

Well, at least you acted prudently. You bought slabbed coins from a reputable dealer who offers a five day return privilege. So if they turn out to look better in real life you can send them back. After all, you wouldn't want someone laying off a low end P-2 on you under the guise of a P-1.

Excellent point by Calgold, they had better not pull the wool over your eyes!

Oh, and one other thing. Remember to buy the coin and not the slab.

I took a vacation to an area with no Internet access. Sure, I broke down and bought a coin in Victoria, but by the time I got to Alaska I was coin-free. image Now that I'm back I only search eBay for a couple of specific coins, and I'm selling coins as I buy more from other dealers.

This thing blocks the word peacoc k??

Braddick, would you like me to add peacoc-kcoins to my table, listed below?
  • Hey, is that 1882 misgraded? It looks way better than the others. What does FR mean anyway? I'd have to agree with the grade on the 1892, you need to be an expert to figure out it really was minted in 1892 image

I'd say one's buying has gotten out of hand when one Morgan is needed for one's Registry set and four Morgans get bought!!!!

    FR would be for "Fair"

  • Braddick,

Good shot at AU55 if submitted for crossover with ACG. Maybe even AU58 and if you ask them MS62. Sell at a profit.

Just in jest Pat. You know how I feel about ACG.

    Pat,
I was the underbidder in that auction and was scratching my head wondering why I was bidding. Thanks for bailing me out.
  • When you have no "spending money" just a bunch of old coins, it is time to take a break!

#1) You actually had to beat out another bidder for those thangs! LOL

#2) Quit when you start keeping purchase secret from your wife...that is a definite no-no. (not that that ever happened to me)

I know it's gotten out of hand when I laugh out loud at eBay auction descriptions once I see the coins. My wife thinks I'm crazy (crazier).

I was thinking of collecting a bunch of Ikes to use as poker chips. I still am actually. That would be awesome! Anyone have 3-400 Ikes in any circulated condition to sell CHEAP?
