SBA$ on 25c Planchet

I have never really collected errors, however I found this coin and just got it back from PCGS today. I think it is pretty cool.

VERY cool coin! And, for an error, a rare grade too.
That's got to be way up there on worth too as there are error collectors that chase after SBA errors in particular.

you are one lucky son-of-a-gun to find that bugger!!image i guess it pays to keep your eyes open. for me, stuff like that is what makes collecting cool. and i'm not even an error collector.

have you ever seen the auction for the wrong metal coin? it's either an SBA on the sac or the other way around. what a thriller!!!

on the topic of SBA's, in the NN that i got today they did a little time capsule of there 50 year in print anniversary. had some neat articles and one that struck my fancy was the design proposal----which was rejected of course----for a dollar coin back in 1977. it was the same size as what we currently have, but the obverse had a flowing hair rendition of liberty with a cap on a pole over her shoulder. it looks to me like a retro peace dollar flowing hair combo and the reverse had a great eagle design with the suns rays coming from behind a mountian!!! frank gasparro at his finest. very strong imagery and i think the type of designs most forum members are hoping for with redesign.

if anyone can find a way to scan and link it in a good high-res pic i think it would be great for a thread topic. it's in Numismatic News, the 50-th anniversary issue on page 36.

Extremely wonderful find! If I ever found something that cool in mint packaging, I'd have to change my pants. image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

That is an amazing coin. You may get calls from guys like Byers and Weinberg.

They could sell it for many hundreds, if not a few thousand dollars,I,m thinking.
Its there a pop on it? Maybe this is 1 with 0 higher?
Does anyone know the market value for it?

SBA's on quarter blanks have sold from a low of $600 ( raw MS 62) to a high of $2000 ( Slabbed PCGS MS 67). There are between 30 and 50 known. I have handled at least 15, Fred I'm guessing the same if not more. Your piece is on the high end of quality and price.
