They sell the quarters because of the demand that arose when the state quarters frist came out. A lot of people started howling because due to uneven distribution they could not get the quarters from their local banks. So the mint started selling them directly to collectors, at a nice profit mark up. Later when the new dollars came out and again the banks didn't carry them the mint started selling them as well. I would not be surprised to see sales of half dollars start soon. Cents, five cents, and dimes get out to the banks fiarly quickly so I doubt if we will see sales of those unless the mint is convinced that they can make a big profit off of those as well.
