What do you do with leftovers from mint or proof sets?

moosesrmoosesr Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭
I thought I would start sending in a few coins in for certification out of my proof and mint sets, but was wondering what to do with the leftovers. Will dealers buy them? Should I take the leftover coins out of the mint cello and put them in 2x2's? I just wondered what other board members do with their leftovers from mint and proof sets.

Thanks, Charlie

I always try to leave the leftovers in the mint cellophane. That way anyone interested will know they're not sliders and haven't been cleaned. Of course, with most modern proof sets you don't have a choice.

I try different toning experiments with them. I just started so I'll let you know how it goes in 50 or 60 years! You can also sell them on Ebay for next to nothing and it'll help recoup $ spent on a set you wanted to break apart. Believe it or not there are a lot of people buying these coins for $1-$3 off EBay.

I leave them in the cello (mint sets) and dump them in a box. When I get enough I count the face value, put them in a bag, and dump them on a bid board. I frequently can get 2X face, but most often maybe a 35% premium.

Proof set singles I sell individually if the coin is worth it and if not, I put them in a bag like the above.
  • I usually put them into flips and give them to young budding coin collectors. They seem to love them.
  • Usually mix them with what ever leftovers I can find and make a Brunswick stew. What's that? Coins?.....Not corns? Oh! Never mind. image
Buy the coin...but be sure to pay for it.

My proof set coins I put in 2X2's and one day when I start my mail order business I'll have plenty of proof singles. That'll probably be in about 50 years.

My mint set coins I've been putting in a big box and have no thoughts about what to do. The box is getting heavy. I guess when I start that mail order business they will be usefull to build sets with.

here's a good tip for anyone who does weekend shows that my local dealer uses very succcesfully. he cuts up the coins individually, leaving them in the cello and then 2x2's them all. what he uses for bins are the sink dish-washing tubs and he has some pre-made plastic cards with what's in each tub. he usually prices them from a quarter up to several dollars depending on what the date/denomination/year/grade is. everything is quite REASONABLE. the price and date of course are on each flip. he'll make anywhere from $100-$500 per show like that and there have been times when the main activity at the small local shows are at those tubs!!! even the other dealers will come and look through. i have found some sweet stuff that i've gotten into PCGS holders, MS67 silver ikes and MS66FS jeffersons most notable. and the bonus he receives is that some of the bin lookers will eventually drift to the higher priced coin cases.

he told me one guy showed up late at the first day of a two day show and came back on sunday. he looked through the bins and spent over $200 alone!! i'd say it's a good solution for all that proof/mint set overflow!!

If they are really crappy proofs, lots of spots or scratches. I put them back into circulation, so when one of you gets it in a roll you can tell us about it here!!image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I stick them into a box, and just keep them. I've been pondering what to do with them for a while, but I think I'll just keep on adding to the box as it's not too big, yet.
