If I missed a previous thread and I'm repeating old news, my apologies. If you follow the links, there are actually live ebay auctions. Shocked! Shocked I tell you! OGS

BTW - I just got back a 1962 Topps SGC 96 breakout rejected from PSA as evidence of trimming so I am not sure that just because a card is in a slab translates into a card being tamper free.
Regards,
Alan
Not altogether a bad idea in my mind but the tampering trimming aspect would be a wory for me as well as the really small wrinkle PSA always seems to find.... Online Grading
No formal recognition of any company exists, so let all novices, beginners, and the general public think all "mint" graded cards are equal. Let sportscards continue to get no established monitoring and, unlike coins or stamps, procede as usual, somewhat as a child's hobby, much like Barbie dolls, Hot wheels, and whatever else has no regulation.
We are fortunate that PSA and the other two majors, along with some outstanding ,experienced, and honest dealers provide some sembalnce of accurate evaluation of a card's condition. It is a shame no unbiased source could assist hobby newcomers, and they might not fall prey to charlatans, TV specials, back-alley grading companies and the like.

This didn't help much when the SGC 96 that I submitted to PSA comes back evidence of trimming.

I did say "some sembalnce", which is spelled correctly as "semblance" please excuse, so I did not mean all slabs from ANY of the big three are going to be always accurate. I am sure we can all say we've seen an under or overgraded card from any on occassion.
No one ever seems to think we could use an informal or formal group, club, association, or corporate giant to do some monitoring and regulation of these new graders. I must be the only collector who thinks it might be nice to recognize/approve truck drivers, dentists, carpenters, and grading companies.
I agree...but what you're really asking for is individual accredited graders...companies don't grade cards...individuals do. Do the graders actually take a test before getting a job with one of the big three? What credentials do any of the graders have?
The only thing that I really like about the OGS service is that they provide an unbiased grade based on a high quality scan. At least you get an unbiased viewpoint on the corners and centering. Sure, there are some missed creases...I have plenty of SGC cards that I have broken out only to find a surface crease.
Regards,
Alan
A scan can be altered without much advanced technology, the scanned card can be switched fairly easy, the computer doing the grading ( not an individual human ) might have a glitch. This idea may have some merit, just like preview grades, but why not trust an opinion from an experienced, honest dealer just as much?
There is another company who offers a CD with grade results along with the slabbed card. One company uses a scale of 1 to 11. Some companies use half grades. A few companies state the centering of a card in BOTH l-r and t-b rather than a composite. Screwdowns and/or taped shut plastic holders are offered by some places. Report card-like explainations are given by several.
How confusing for a new hobbist, even the big 3 have slighly different ideas as to centering limits for each individual grade and they must have different frames of reference for concepts like "slight" corner wear.
Would it be nice if merely a small group of collectors tried to standardize, monitor, or even recognize "Expert grading companies" ? Perhaps any new outfit would have to conform to any one of the 3 majors standard/guidelines to start rather than introducing new groundbreaking methods and terms, which just confuse novices. Maybe some new features are good, maybe the collectors should pre-approve before they are released. Maybe an idea of a group of collectors doing something together is too radical
regarding OGS.. I agree.. I think the good thing about them is they are at least trying to give some standardization to the raw cards sold on eBay. many collectors can be confused by some of those eBay ads you see by less than honest dealers.. the fuzzy, out of focus pictures and describing a card as "GEM MINT". At least with OGS collectors can get a clear view of the card. And if a dealer submits a scan that is altered.. and OGS grades it.. the card is sold on eBay and the buyer is upset... it will be the Seller's reputation that is on the line for misleading all parties. If a collector doesn't analyze an eBay sellers feedback history prior to buying.. then it's their own fault anyway.
also... I emailed OGS to see if they would grade the cards that have had countless known reprints/fakes done. They said they have had requests to grade jordan and gretzky rookies which they have refused because of the number of reprints circulating.. and we all know that some of these reprint/fakes are so good that even a grader can't tell the difference. they also told me that if the scan does not meet their specifications they will reject it as well. I get the sense that these guys are trying to do an honest job to help collectors make informed decisions about buying raw or ungraded cards on eBay.... which is a good thing!
anyway... I like the idea as you can tell
