Recent acquisition to my Toned Roosevelt set. What do you guys think of the toning?

I have three complete sets of toned certified Mercury dimes.
I am now starting to focus more on the Roosevelts.
What do you guys think of this toning? I just won this baby. ebay: 1386872172: Link in Wayne's post

I don't see a gold and purple contrast like that often.

I think alot of people skip Roosies. I also think they are grossly undervalued especially MS66-68.
This is a highly undervalued series, particularly the high grades pre 1964.

Beauty - and what a deal! There's nothing like purple on a coin!
I agree with Winged, Roosies are probably undervalued, escpecially those with toning!

Colorfulcoins has some nice deals - check it out Lucy

I agree, I think they are way undervalued too, especially in 67 or higher. I've got an MS 68 up for sale right now with the brightest monster toning I've seen and it's doing nothing. I didn't really want to sell it anyway(but I have bills to pay) so maybe it's just as well. You got a nice coin and Craig is a great guy to deal with.

Very nice coin, and yes, I believe right out of a mint set. I've seen those purples in mint set dimes before... combined with the light gold I think it's very attractive. Also, the price is a steal. I find a definite two-tier pricing system in coins of this era with NGC and PCGS. Holder bias really seems to hold true with these coins, the quarters, nickels, cents and Halves. Someday I don't think it will make a lick of difference. How could you go wrong with a coin that pretty and a price that reasonable?
    You did good.

One thing I wanted to add.... if you read Colorful coin's response to clackamas about the grading of Roosevelt dimes the other day, you can be assured that he knows what he is selling and talking about.
I have purchased from this seller, and he knows his coins and is good to deal with.

  • Ive seen silver coins from those years with this kind of toning and they do tend to be nice, though I have to admit that I'm more impressed with the toning patterns on Morgans and seated liberty coinage, but maybe in 75-100 years yours will be like that too image Nice coin!

    Brian,

I like it alot. One of my favorite coins is a rosy 1960 proof rosy I found in a box of unopened sets. IMO, they are underappreciated.image

Nice. Whitman folders do a nice job of toning Roosevelts just like that.

Brian - thanks, I don't know if they're that nice, but I'm proud of them. It's not really that hard of a set to put together. Prices are falling on Ikes and I think they may someday be undervalued, of course now that I've overpaid!

And thanks for the Roosie pic, I think I just found my next set - Toned Roosies MS 66+. I need to start slowly as I'm now also starting a peace registry set.

    superb!

  • The gold is a litte splotchy, but still a cool Mardi Gras Roosie! Wish I could see the reverse. Anytime I hear "purple and gold" I am reminded of this toned Merc (Obverse, Reverse).

I hope I can find a Roosevelt as nice as yours to replace the sad little toned Roosie (Reverse) in my typeset.

  • holy smoke winged. I am working on a Merc set now, and am trouble getting a nice XF-AU set.

You think it is because I am cheap?

If you have some AU's on the chopping block, please feel free to PM me. XF's in harder to find dates even.
