PCGS and "Museum Markings". It's not damage?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,970 ✭✭✭✭✭
Interesting coin. I wish I knew more about what it means to have "Museum Markings" on the coin. I'm assuming the museum that owned it marked the coin for identification of ownership?

I wish the auction showed the PCGS insert.
Can anyone enlighten me on what these are?

It looks like they are grease pencil markings and I'm sure a Museum somewhere along the lines DID mark the coin.
I'm just curious enough though to ask why Chopmarks aren't allowed (legit) but these markings are for encapsulation.

I'm sure that anyone that has had a coin BB'd by PCGS for a scratch or some damage would also like to know!

I didn't notice the marking on the obv so much as I noticed the peculiar wear on the breasts of the reverse

I called N.E. Numismatics, who we do steady business with at shows, to ask about the Ebay item mentioned. I was told that they received a letter from Rick at PCGS stating in part "Tom, these museum markings are considered ok to holder. We would continue to authenticate and grade as 45".

I have seen a number of coins over the years which contain letters and/or numbers such as this one, which are said to be museum markings. By the way, if anyone would like further information, they are invited to email N.E. Numismatics at : chris@northeastcoin.com

** Edited to list correct email address above (sorry!)

They are having email problems today but expect it to be cleared up by tomorrow.

  • Attributions were often placed on the coin in India ink. I assume that the 'D' on the coin stood for 'duplicate'. It's a M. 1.2-C, but I can't really make out the letters in the left obverse field. Dr. Thomas Hall inked his attributions on the edges of his coins and Hall ink on edge coins are highly prized today.
