Speaking of Modern five-dollar gold, ...the one with Washington on the obverse...
I recently acquired this coin, the 1999W Washington Half Eagle, PR69DCAM, and am surprised (and somewhat appalled) at the quality/lack of quality for this coin.
The coin displays strike doubling x 3 on the reverse letter devices (US of A, Five Dollars) and on this particular PCGS graded proof, there are also at least three separate instances of being "struck through wire," or some other material. I realize that such items are sometimes overlooked in grading assessments, but, I would think in the case of a modern PROOF with somewhat limited numbers, such errors would bear more weight.
I have some of the common early ones, and a handful of the 2001 Capitol Visitors Center. I don't plan to make a collection of these... I may even sell some of the early ones.
Happily, when I submitted my CVCs, one of them graded MS70!
