Latest market report

THe latest DHRC newsletter again talks about how HOT everything is in the coin market (just as they always seem to say)...I am still looking for some doomsayer to come along and scare the bejeezus out of everyone by announcing that the market stinks! Haha...just kidding.
Seriously, one thing I have noticed with these newsletters is they tell you what the hottest thing is right now - in this particular issue they focus on Walkers - then proceed to tell you to buy the hottest item...
Now I am no investment big-whig, hell, I hardly have any money at all (LOL---I mean, sob), but buying the items when the price is skyrocketing - or has already been skyrocketing - seems like it could be bad advice. Maybe if you are looking to get in and get out quickly, or maybe if you think prices are only going to continue to rise (you can always tell yourself that ), that would be good advice...what am I missing here. I think it is easy to tell us what ishot right now, so buy it...the harder and of course more helpful adivce would be to tell us what is going to be hot next year...
Any one care to take a guess?

I actually saved the article since it really did have some good information in it and discussed the Complete set, Long set and short set. (I finished the short set, working on the Long set).

The way I look at it...a lot of areas of the market are on fire, so it might be a good time to hold off on purchases...or even consider selling...
Not that I would ever sell anything...
When I read the letter I pretty much thought the samething. They tell you how hot the market is and they just happen to have those coins available for you. How conciderate of them. If the market is that hot shouldn't we be selling our walkers?

is everything. Don't look at only the long or short term trends or you might get
into something that was a flash in the pan. Don't buy or sell too early or too
late. If you figure out how to do this then let me know. But do your own working,
thinking and grading.

I've been fairly successful in buying my coins in the way you described, buying what's not hot, unless I just can't live without it.
My primary collecting focus is on type. Therefore, I'm open to buying whatever interests me at the time. Of course now that I'm involved in completing Regestry sets, my focus has narrowed a bit.
With the way cons are selling now, I don't want to get caught up in a late 80's buying fiasco.
We are the hobbyists / buyers who must discern the difference between hype and reality. Of course retailers will always tell you it is time to buy.
Buy quality where you can and follow your collecting vision. This is a hobby and while none of us want to get ripped off, I think we all believe businessmen whose livelyhood depends on sales are going to try and sell something.

Monstavet,
You certainly should be. By this statement, you've already demonstrated that you're smarter than most of them:
<< <i>but buying the items when the price is skyrocketing - or has already been skyrocketing - seems like it could be bad advice. >>
The most successful long-term investors are those who buy when the herd is selling, and unload when the herd is buying.
