Ok how many people collect whole runs of coins

What I mean but this is like all the small cents, nickles, dime ect. I am wondering because I only see most people going for like the war years or just the Indian's or any combination not the whole 9 yards. Am I crazy for doing this???

    In most series that's almost an impossible task... well, at least if you don't have lots of money. Just think of what it would be like to complete all halves or all quarters for just the 20th century alone!

    I have every regular issue 1c - $1 for the 20th Century by date and mint. I also have the complete set of Indian Head Cents and Liberty Head Nickels.

    Do You mean every Cent, Nickle, ect ever Minted or just a whole Series of Coins ?

    One of the Merc Registry Members does have every Dime Minted except 2 I believe. Quite a Collection and would be a sight to see.

    That is the set I am working on too. 1900-present, business strike, by date and mint mark (no varieties, proofs, errors, etc), one cent to one dollar. I am about 80% complete and have a little over 1025 coins in the set so far, still need a little under 250. Approximate numbers.

    Many years ago before "certified" coins I used to collect complete sets. I sold everything off in 1979. And what I found back then is the dealers didn't want any of the common stuff. They just wanted the keys. With some effort I was able to find a dealer whom did take my entire collection (I did keep some key coins), but it took a lot of work. Now, with the registry I am starting a Mercury Dime Collection of MS65 and better (I may have to settle for circulated keys). It is bringing back the fun. I started my first registry set of Statehood Proof quarters (these will probably go down in value--but I don't care--I want the silver proof PR69DCAMs, and it has nothing to do with profit/loss--It has to do with simply wanting to build that set--I'm tied with about 60 others for fourth place). Anyway the registry ignited my desire to collect, and I am starting to build the Mercury Dime Set. The way I have been purchasing coins over the last many years has been hit and miss. I buy what I like, I buy keys, and I buy high grade. I think it is different today with sets; however, if you are building for profit, you should do some research and make sure you are not buying coins that will be hard to sell because there is no market. The dealer in my area will not buy graded coins at their value. He simply pays graysheet unc prices. He told me he offered a guy with a set of 1943 Steel cents (PCGS MS67) $2 per coin. I know other area are different, but you should know your market, before investing unless you are simply collecting and don't care of profit/loss.

    I collect all varieties of Kennedy halves and Jefferson nickels. My Kennedy half collection is complete, and I need about 11 Jefferson nickels to finish that set. And yes, it took some bucks to do this. image

    Two Cent pieces is doable. But, the coins are ugly and overpriced, so I'd suggest that everyone stay away from them.image

    I have complete runs of Jeffersons, Roosevelts, Eisenhowers, and SBAs. However I just consigned my Unc Anacs set of Lincolns, and I will now concentrate on Type sets. That way I can have a nice example of each of the different series. 20th Century and newer for now. I plan on working my way backwards though. Of course there are many variations as well, so it will be a long task. So much to learn, so much to buy, and yet little money or time. Oh well. live while you can. mdwoods

    I collect capped bust and seated liberty half dimes by date/mint. I have a nearly complete run of small cents: 1857-2002.

    I'm in the process of putting together a Morgan Dollar set in Good/VG.

    Like most collectors I have the Whitmans full of IHC, LIncolns, Jeffs, Rosies, etc. Never did get the 09-S-VDB because I won't pay $600 for a penny. I have the whole year & mint runs of Peace & Morgans several times over because that's what I'm really interested in.
    Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Ok you guys kinda have the idea, what I mean is I am working on the small cent set from 1857 to date (not including the proofs) I know you will say what about the 1856 flying eagle well if I can find one out there and it isnt like 1 billion$ heck or even over 500$ I would buy it. Thats what im talking about not just the jefferson nickles im talking all of the nickles. My thought as to why more people don't do this is because it requires to much work. Hey im for the work bring it on its all in the hunt for the coin to complete it. And as far as selling it to dealers forget them im not building this small cent set just to turn around and have some dealer say I dont want the common I ONLY WANT THE KEYS AND SEMI KEYS anything other then those you can throw on the side of the road. I think this type of set is probally vary rare.

    When I was doing type sets I only wanted high grade first year of issue. Do you think I was nuts or off my rocker? image

    That might be tough with Flying Eagles or SLQs.

    I do have the Flying Eagle Cents as well so I guess I have the whole run of small cents from 1857 to date.

    That would be me. And I have been looking at the 1802 at Teaparty. It's a Braddick coin.

    I lack 6 large cents of having all the cents 1793 to date, I have all of the two cents, I need teo nickel three cent to have all of the three cent pieces. I have all of the nickels from 1866 to date and lack only thee of the seat half dimes to carry me back to 1837.

    Conder101, it sounds like you are talking complete series.

    Indianabyron - are you talking about complete series??

    Stujoe - I haven't counted up all the possibilities, but is 1275 coins all that is needed to have a complete run, which I understand to be a specimen from each year and mintmark OR a type set comprised of complete series. That boggles the mind BUT it WOULD be an outstanding collection; has it even been done (obviously it would have had to been publicized for us to know)?

    Louis Eliasberg, Sr. at the time of his death in 1976 had one of every known U.S. coin by date and mint. I think two discoveries were made afterwards.

    My lincolns are complete and my Indian/flyers are 90% so I guess the answer is yes I do.

    Actually it's the 1872-CC I don't have right now. I have a 74-CC. Just for correctness.

    Empress Jayne,

    First off, I have to say I wish may coins looked as beautiful as you do!

    As for the 94-S, no I don't have that dime. I don't collect coins not meant for circ. I won't be getting the 73-CC that is unique either. I do have the other 73-CC though.
