    thegemmintman-

Actually, having grown up in a family supermarket (that we owned and operated for 70+ years), I would believe that my father was eligible to receive the elusive 1970 Kellogg's promotional cards. Don't worry -- I'll hold them out or get them graded and sell them to Davalillo ;-)

    Marc,

Atta boy. Its guys like you we need to put this set back in its rightful place. Also, its not just age that makes a set vintage although that is the most important consideration--its quality. The 1968 Topps 3D set is a legitimate vintage set as it is difficult to put together--even in 8 as the Flood, Powell and Stottlemeyer cards are very difficult. The Kellogg's cards are everywhere and probably with a little help from Zardoz and buying on ebay, one could put together a psa 9 set in under a month. This is more characteristic of a modern set--name me one vintage set that one could put together in 9 with no difficulty. There is not one--thats why this is not a vintage set....but it doesn't seem like Gemmint and Zardoz will agree so ....the goal of ultimately displacing Gemmint continues.

Speaking of the cut-off for vintage....

I have noticed in the past few weeks that in the Ebay: Baseball-MLB: 1970-1979 category, there is an average of something like 800 cards graded PSA 9 MINT on any given day. It is sort of shocking/amazing/surprising for me to see so many examples offered on a basically continual basis. What this speaks to me is that, except for a few tough cards in each set, the long-term scenario is that most of these sets can be easily built in PSA 9 condition. The only other necessary factor is for PSA to have future 1970s grading specials....

I was just on Naxcom looking for some early 80's Rose cards in PSA 9-10, and noticed they changed the format. It is much easier now than before and they have two separate categories: Modern and Vintage.

Vintage was up to 1980 by the way image

  • Oh Vic you're always such the silly guy. Being plentiful doesn't in and of itself make it modern. Have you ever collected coins? There are millions upon millions of Morgan Dollars (late eighteen hundreds to early nineteen hundreds) out there for collectors, but they're still considered vintage coins. Now in comparison there are only a few thousand vintage '70 Kellogg's worth collecting.

Look Vic, when the PSA Registry Awards are handed out soon (and I know you will win your fair share), check under the VINTAGE Baseball category, and you will see thegemmintman taking home the top prize for the '70 Kellogg's. PSA knows it's a vintage set, and so should you.

    Such a silly willy.

BTW, how can anyone call a card that was purposely produced with rounded corners vintage? Rounded corners are like cards having breasts.

    1904 Fan Craze
    1913 The National Game
    1913 Tom Barker Game
    1914 Polo Grounds Game

Methinks that PSA would consider any of those above listed items as being vintage.....

  • Ok, those examples are vintage girly cards.
  • Marc wasn't yet born in 1970????????????????/

Not only does that make the set VINTAGE, but it also makes me feel old, very old.

    Gem,

I do not expect to win prizes. The best I can claim is just having a lot of sets underway--now above 80 plus the player,HOF sets etc. I only have two complete vintage sets where every card is 8 or better(55 Topps football and 61 Fleer BBall) but there are quite a few that are close.
On the other hand, for best set in the "short, modern" category that omits one key player, I would vote for you as well. But if you are lumped in with Bob Earhart in 69 topps super, I think his effort is more impressive.

    Vic
  • Vic, we both will get certificates from PSA for best in a given particular set. That's what I was referring to. Not the plaques.

The '69 Topps Supers are "breastful" '68 Topps 3-D's without the 3-D.

BTW - there is no Short Vintage Category, but there should be.

Zardoz -- does it help that I feel old whenever I am walking on a college campus? It's a really disturbing thing, I tell you:

The downsides of my being so OLD:

    A) Whenever I see hot young college girls, part of me feels wrong for noticing....
    B) When I was an assistant teacher in college, all of my students didn't remember the first half of the 1980s. That disturbed me...
    C) I am so old that I never just "hang out" with friends, it seems like it is couples getting together to talk and eat. How come I never do anything with friends anymore that doesn't involve food?

So, Zardoz, things aren't so bad. Your dancing hot dog is probably some hip young "Hot Dog Band" with a name I haven't heard of, playing music I don't like, talking about things I don't understand.

We're not that much different after all!

I appreciate the attempt to pull me out of the depths of despair I find my self in. In analyzing your post, it has merely made matters worse.

    For instance, you stated:

"A) Whenever I see hot young college girls, part of me feels wrong for noticing...."

For me I look at them and say "Stop looking, my children are older than these gals"

    B) When I was an assistant teacher in college, all of my students didn't remember the first half of the 1980s. That disturbed me...

Disturbs you!!!!!!!!!! It mortifies me!!!!!!!!!!! That was only yesterday! I think that we still have food in the pantry with expiration dates earlier than that.

    C) I am so old that I never just "hang out" with friends, it seems like it is couples getting together to talk and eat. How come I never do anything with friends anymore that doesn't involve food?

At least you still have friends. Of all the "young couples" that we knew and had social activities with, we are the only ones still married. As they separated, they no longer wanted to associate with the past. Anyway, they only gave our marriage six months, and 28 years later, I guess that we proved them wrong. Actually, the only reason that we stayed together WAS to prove them wrong.

"We're not that much different after all! "

Oh yes we are! Thanks to the generational difference between us, the rich, rewarding, and sometimes painful experiences life has taught me, the highs and lows, the vistas of worlds you have yet to discover, I can differentiate between a VINTAGE set and a modern set.

  • There's only a little more than a day remaining in the Kellogg's Kontest and our cracker jack team of Kellogg's DeKoders are hard at work determining the winners. To give you some insight into the technology we employ to help us make these difficult decisions I'm displaying an image of our Tabulating Room for you.

    image
  • Actually, that's the device that Zardoz makes his Horlen PSA 9's with. It's a sweet little machine!
  • When you're working on VINTAGE cards, does it not make sense to employ vintage equipment? It's so necessary to give these ancient cards the air of authenticity that they so richly deserve.

GET THOSE ENTRIES FOR THE KONTEST IN FOLKS! Winners will be notified by email. Void where prohibited by law. Entrants must be at least 21 years of age, except for Riccaboni, who gets a free pass 'cos we like him. (Speaking of which, we still have to come up with some fake ID for the lad as the Kellogg's Krap Shoot, Atlantic City 2003, is just around the corner).

    When does the Kontest end?

    John
  • Basilone, I posted at least twice that the kontest ends at Friday (today), at 12:00 midnight PST.

I'm going to have to deduct a few points from your K-score for lack of attention. It shouldn't hurt you though...maybe image.

Mr. Pied Piper (aka GemMint....arch enemy of V** D********)

I knew the answer of kourse.....I was asking for those who were afraid to ask (ie. those who just tuned in). Im sure youve seen my submission.....which will no doubt konfirm my knowledge of the VINTAGE set in kuestion.

    John image
  • Basilone, thank you for reminding me to re-check your submission. Apparently you spelled "Kellogg's" incorrectly in the Subject Line of your e-mail. You spelled it "Kellogs". Unfortunately that's a few more points off of your score, but don't worry, it shouldn't hurt you much...maybe image.

    Davallilo.
You have completely overlooked the 1971 Greatest Moments set(s).................
My sincere thanks!!!!!!!!!. For my money the '69 supers are too easy in 9's and 10's (hell, I got 11 tens on one invoice of 50 cards) , second only to the plastic kelloggs things. Bob's effort is interesteing and most of us have contributed a 10 or two to him.
So now I am considering selling my 9.03 set to you. I think it would propell you into 3rd place and get you close the Charlie.
what percentage of SMR will you pay.????
  • I would just like to point out that 15.7% of all '69 Topps Supers submitted to PSA get a grade of PSA 10 versus 1.5% for the '70 Kellogg's.

    Thank you, Kellogg's Klub

I don't know--your set rating is not that much higher than mine. I will buy the cards you have that are better than mine but with almost an 8.9 rating, I don't think its economical to buy the whole set.
  • BobSBobS Posts: 1,738 ✭✭
    D.

An 8.9 rating?? I figured by now, with your PSA 10-konnections, and the proclaimed vast abundance of high-grade examples literally growing on trees, you would at least be above 9.

    I reaffirm my allegiance.

    Go Kellogg's Klub.

No hard feelings though Vic, I admire your tenacity

We were talking about the '69 supers.
davallilo and murcerfan will have at least 9.5 in the '70 Kelloggs set by Thanksgiving.
I'm not stopping there, I'm gonna do '71 kelloggs too! and My '68 topps set is shaping up nicely (will unretire in a month or so). Then who's gonna be 3-d King??
(probably Davallilo,......... but slingin' bull sure is fun)

    BobS,

You do know we are talking about 69 Topps Super(a real set) not the Kellogs Katastrophe don't you. I am certainly above 9 for that.
