PVC damage

A noncollecting friend of mine recently brought an 1810 copper for me to examine. He got the coin from his grandfather and was not sure how it had been stored. The coin is covered with ugly green PVC residue. Is there any way to safely remove the PVC so that I can try to grade his coin?
Any information would be greatly appreciated. John

Coincare is by far the best for copper. It is available from Brooklyn Galleries. Its about $4
a bottle.(a very small bottle). I love this stuff. Brooklyn Galleries advertises in Coin World and NN>

I think some solution of acetone for silver... just not sure which one.

  • Greg, on silver i use straight virgin acetone and rinse with distilled water. Won't harm the coins surfaces at all, VERY Flammable though.
BTW, Parma Broadview Hall show was GREAT!! image

  • Thanks Dave, I will give it a shot. Wish I could have made it, but had the kids this weekend.

  • Greg, Hope to see you at the Ritchfield Show in Nov. BTW if you use a Q tip with the acetone make sure it is a paper type not the plastic or the plastic will dissolve onto the coin as you are using it. Hand protection also reccomended such as powder free lab gloves.
