How's this for wild toning?

I tried to buy this coin back in Feb or March during Goldberg's Benson sale but was outbid on the floor. I figured I'd never see the coin again and was really disappointed with myself for letting the coin get away.

Amazingly, it showed up at my table at the ANA and I didn't let it walk away that time. The fellow that offered it was the owner who had placed it in that original auction but told me the coin was returned for some reason. Don't know why, but who cares?

Any thoughts on the type of toning? I'd guess end roll but am not really sure. I do know it's one of the wildest I've seen.

That is, without a doubt, the nicest morgan I have EVER seen!

WOW!! I'm gonna have to think about that one for a while...............
Don't look like any endroll I ever seen. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Cool Looking Reverse. Usually do not care for real Vivid Tone like that but that is Really Neat Looking and Different.
  • That has to be the ULTIMATE toned Morgan! It looks there is lightning flashing all around it. It's very cool.

I have no idea what kind of toning that would be. Do you think it is end roll toning? Usually it wouldn't go in all sorts of directions.

    Supercoin,

Tie-dyed.....interesting thought. I bet Walter Breen would have loved it....sort of looks like one of his T-shirts.

It really is an amazing coin and one that I was very glad to see again. I had been kicking myself in the butt ever since I let it get away the first time. I kept wondering who owned it and if I'd live long enough to have a shot at it again.

However, I learned a valuable lesson. When you see a really beautiful, really unusual coin that you really like, buy it!!! It might be your last shot.

  • I just have to ask this question.image Did you pay more then what your bid was in the auction, or was it the same price? You don't have to answer if you don't want to.

    LW,

I paid less than what the high bidder had bid at the auction and was pleased to do so. As I said, I figured that I'd never see the piece again and it was one of the more interesting toned dollars I had seen in quite a while.

  • Only partly joking about the tie dye image, it looks like there might have been two criss-crossed sets of rubber bands involved, maybe holding together a stack of paper-wrapped coins?

Any darker marks along the outer rim that would support that theory? And what does the obverse look like?

Probably immature bag toning and it was on it's way to being a purple monster?

    Supercoin,

That too is an interesting idea.

When I first saw the coin I was at a loss to explain its color pattern but knew that I liked it. A couple of other guys looked at it and immediately said, "end roll" and I probably let their confidence influence me. There are some lines on the coin that might indicate end roll but they're not very sharp.

I can't recall the appearance of the outer rim. I certainly didn't see any evidence of rubber band residue.

The obverse is white and probably grades 64 or 65.

  • The toning is somewhat similar to a coin our old buddy Bondman has listed right now on Ebay.

    Similar type of toning
  • Supercoin: you crack me up!

Could that be bag toning? Maybe the coin was stuck up where the bag was twisted close at the top? Actually I've never seen a bag of Morgans, does anybody have a scan of what one looks like?

It almost looks like it had some kind of crumpled paper, like tissue, wadded up and packed in the end of a roll, or maybe just a very well folded(to the point of being loose with no sharp folds) end of the roll. Reguardless, it's a neat coin. Thanks for showing it Bryan.

  • Ok Bryan and others - riddleme this:

You see a coin like this one or a similar wildly toned coin - what is your thinking process as you try to decide if the toning is real or AT? Thanks

It looks similiar to this Morgan I posted here a while back and nobody could quite explain it either. Mine looks like it might be the same pattern as yours, only different paper folds. Maybe the straight edges of the paper wasn't in contact with your coin. It's really cool, I like weird coins. Everybody has purple monsters but not everybody has weird stuff like we like. I'm inclined to say endroller on both.

    Frank,

This one was easy. It was a no-question authentically toned piece. The only question for me was, "how much?"

Yes, the pattern is unusual, but the colors were not atypical of what is commonly encountered on naturally toned Morgans. I did not believe it to be bag toned but due to the overall 'look' of the coin, I had no problem making the decision to acquire the piece.

    Dog,

I agree with your conclusion on your 82-S. I'd say it's definitely end roll toned and perhaps the paper was not in real close contact with the coin's surface. Or perhaps the coins were moved periodically thereby giving something of a blur to the pattern. I would suspect that only a millimeter or two of movement would produce such an effect.

That is truly a beautiful thang! I don't know what you paid, but I think you got your money's worth!

  • gsaguy, actually I didn't mean rubber band residue, I was wondering if there were darker areas of toning on the outside of the rim that coincided with the darker criss-cross pattern across the obverse, i.e. the rubber bands (or something) holding the paper closer there as well.

    Supercoin,

When I next visit my babies, I'll check the toning patterns on the rim and let you know. Could be fun trying to figure out exactly how that toning pattern was imparted.
