How would a 1959 ANACS 5 step nickel compare to a PCGS FS nickel?

I have found a 1959 ANACS MS66 5 step Jefferson nickel advertised by a dealer (no picture) and wondered how it might typically compare to a 1959 PCGS MS66 FS nickel? Any opinions on what would the odds would be for it crossing over to a PCGS MS66 FS?
Thanks, Charlie

My recommendation would be to request a picture. Otherwise check out the return policy. My experience some 5 step ANACS will cross, maybe 50 50. If it listed as a 5 1/2 or 6 step by ANACS odds of it crossing will increase.

I waited too long, I just checked back with the dealer and the coin has already been sold!! It was just listed today.

Well, I guess someone took a chance on it...my experience with ANACS is similar to Frank's...some definitely will cross, some definitely will not...Then again, some PCGS FS-designated Jeffs are borderline, too, although PCGS is the strictest.

  • My experience is that NGC is more strict than PCGS. -mark-
  • I agree that NGC is stricter. I've only sent 2 NGC MS Jefferson Nickels to PCGS. NGC MS65 and a NGC MS64 FS. The one came back MS65 FS and the other MS64 FS.
