Please help me identify these books???

I was given these books about 5 years ago by my step mother, and I think they are extremely interesting. Inside is a list of prices this dealer would pay for coins and I have two identical books, one for US Coins and one for Foreign coins. The only clue for me is that they are copyrighted 1948 by Hewitt Bros. and as you can see they are in Near Mint Condition.

50 cents would have bought you every date and mintmark from 1916 on except for the 1917 S WL, which was $1.00

1804 $500 to $5000 depending on condition

1893 $1.00
1894 $1.00

Trade dollars could have been had for $1.50 to 5.00 except for the 1884 Proof $200.00 and the 1885 proof $400.00.

All in all I would say that most of us were born too late to see buy prices like these, but oh what a world it would be for us collectors. imageimageimageimageimage

If anyone wants to know specific prices for dates and denominations not mentioned, please PM me. Thanks

I think this was the work of Lee F. Hewitt, a long time publisher. Hes best known for his "Numismatic Scrapbook" (1930s - 1960s ?). This would be an early value guide before the "Red Book". Wayte Raymond also did a guide book at that time as well.
  • Wow, that 1894 S dime would've been the greatest investment there.image

  • These were simply lee Hewitt's buying prices book that he sold to the general public with the hope of buying coins from them at lower prices than he would have to pay knowledgeable collectors. Other dealers did the same thing. Max Mehl's Star Rare Coin Book is the most famous example of these.

they did that? Publish whole books in an attempt to decieve the public?
"spare change? Nahhhhh...never have any...sold it all on E-bay..."
see? My Auctions "Got any 1800's gold?"
