Flea Market Finds, great deals to be had!!!

It never ceases to amaze me what can be found at flea markets, and how cheap some coins can be picked up. I went to my local flea market yesterday and found a gentleman selling sports cards, that just happened to have two cases full of coins as well. Most of the coins were undergraded and priced out of an old Redbook price guide. The nice gentlemen then offered me half off all marked prices........sold image There weren't any real rarities or anything, but the coins weren't the typically G-4 cleaned coins you find at flea market' either. He had a lot of Barber, Franklin, and WL halves and he also had quite of few BU Wheaties, and at least a dozen V-Nickels in VF to XF condition. All and all a nice selection of common date collectors coins, that I probably should have bought all of had finances permited. I really didn't have any cash on me but I bought the following:

1865 3 Cent Nickel in EF-40 for $6.00
1915 Barber Dime in VF-20 for $3.00
1926 Lincoln cent in BU more red than brown for $2.00 image
1915- D Lincoln solid XF-40 for $4.00 image

I know these are cheap coins, but I also know that there are more collectors on a budget on these boards like me, then there are the big dollar coin collectors. This post is really about being able to find nice collectable coins on a limited budget.

The 3 cent Nickel is my first, and although it is the most common date available, it is a nice grade with plenty of mint luster left on it, so I am extremely happy with the price.

Not the type of coins to retire on, but excellent finds. Who knows someday he may have better stuff at discount prices. I always look for coins at flea markets, you just have to know whats been messed with and what hasn't.
  • Not bad K'zilla - my experience at fleamarkets has been more fleas than good coins - glad to hear you faired well!

I still have coins that I used to buy at the local fleamarket. I started this when I was 10 years old in 19??.

I agree with FC57Coins, usually over graded, over priced junk when it came to U.S. coins. However, the best deals I've found have been with world coins. Most dealers don't know anything them. They would price them according to size, 10c, 25c, 50c each or maybe 5 for $1. I've gotten many a nice coin this way, even silver at times. My best find has been a 1773 Virginia Halfpenny for 50c in a box of British coppers.
  • I remember the day i was at my local coin shop, when a gentleman came in that had bought some whitman folders from the flea market for 2 or 3 bucks apeice they had a few coins in them. One was a wheat cent folder that contained a 1955 double die that was in the album with the reverse showing. Needless to say the gentleman was happy with his 2 dollar purchase. Sometimes the fleamarket people have no idea what they have but some are con-artists.

Hey cool good catch! image The only coins I ever see are in the cases with the rusted pocket knives, old class rings and master locks with no keys and are priced at the 80s market peak but are like VG Buffs etc.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Hey Dog97,

We must be visiting the same ole "marketeer."

Did you get the spiel about "how much money he is into these for" so he won't bargain on the prices at all? How about, how is daughter is the MORE knowledgeable between the two, buys all this stuff for him to unload and is the ONLY one who could negotiate, but is NEVER at his table.

BTW, this guy is missing his right hand. (Only mentioned for descriptive purposes)
