Help - should I become a wireless sniper?

I am about to give up on my phone line internet connection as it is a piece of ****. Am looking at a wireless (radio) conection.

You guys are on the internet quite a bit, am I making the right move?

I get no transmissions sometimes, or lose it altogether.

The cost is $450 for the radio dish, $50 per month for 256K.

I'm not going to snipe

  • Do you have DSL in your area? Very fast, very reliable, and a heck of a lot cheaper than that.
  • You can use a sniping service. There are many out there, and most are free.

If that's the fastest, reliable connection available where you live, and you can afford it, go for it. The more speed the better. mdwoods

What happens if a bad storm comes by - do you lose the signal? Does it go to a satellite or to a boosting station similar to cellular phones? I'm unhappy with my internet connection as well but why snipe?

I gotta echo CoinDaughter's advice, DSL is pretty darn good if you can get it in your area.

edited cuz i spelled it dls
  • I agree with the others, that you should check into DSL or Cable Modem if it's available.

If you go for wireless, make sure you're looking at a 2-way system. I believe there are some cheaper methods out there that use the satellite for downloads, and your phone line for uploads. This would let you display web pages faster, but your snipes would use the phone line to send.

I love my cable modem. I've got ebay refreshes of 1 sec. and i've sniped with only 2 seconds.
    AND I ALWAYS LEAVE FEEDBACK!
  • We don't have cable internet service here or I would go for it.

I don't plan to snipe, I used that to create a link to the forum topics so I would not be accused of posting something
that did not pertain to coins.

Maybe I should have posted that I was going to sell a $20 gold coin for a new internet service.

I'm with Sean - the cable modems are awesome - successful snipes with virtually no time left image

If you do want to snipe - just go sign up for a free sniping service - they will do the snipes for you and you'll win the auctions. Keep the same slow modem and save the money for more coins - monthly image Instead of paying for some high service.

    Tade,

I'd go with either DSL thru the phone company or Cable Modem thru your cable service provider. In my building, my option is OnlineDSL by Verizon or Cable Modem by Time Warner/Roadrunner.

I've chosen Cable Modem. I also have a Linksys WiFi 802.11b router/firewall/DHCP server that allows me to connect my 3-node PAN to the rest of the world. The Linksys router allows wired connectivity as well, but at 100 Mbps. (That's for my Redhat box.) My PC and laptop are both wireless. (I use Linksys wireless NIC's for the PC and laptop as well.)

I bought the Linksys equipment from buy.com.

If you're any good any network administration, you can also play with the configuration on your router/firewall.

PS You'll have a problem with installing the drivers for your wireless NIC if you're using XP. The Linksys helpdesk was able to get me through the problem, and I can help you too.

PPS The problem w/ XP has to do with a friggin' marketing decision by MS! image There is no technical problem at all.
