DMPL?

I have seen many DMPL morgan dollars and i was curious is DMPL a morgan term just like FBL,FSB,FS are for other series or is DMPL used for more than just morgans?

I have seen the designation only on morgans in slabs.
The term thou can be used for any ms coin.

The term DMPL is a Morgan dollar designation.

I guess you could use it for any mint state coin, but it would be like using the "full head" designation to describe standing or seated liberty series coins; they both have a small head and the term IS descriptive.

  • I'm sure most of us have seen this at the bottom of our submission posts, but for those who have never seen it, here it is:

    Designations

PCGS requires the following attributes for:

Full Band (FB) - Mercury Dimes (Lady with wings); On the back of the coin is two columns, in-between the columns, in the middle, there are two lines connecting the columns. Both lines should be completely across from left to right, without any breaks, marks or gaps. Note: PCGS may designate in grades of 60 and higher.

Full Head (FH) - Standing Liberty Quarters. Two types of 1917 (one with breast showing the other without breast showing). The mint mark is on the front left bottom.
    1. Three leaves in hair must be clear and distinct.
    2. Earhole must be present.
    3. Hairline must be distinct from top of forehead to back of neck.
Note: PCGS may designate 1918/7 Quarters as Full Head in grades of XF40 and higher.

Full Steps (FS) - Jefferson Nickels. MS60 or better, at least five complete steps must appear on Monticello. Any steps that join or fuse together, whether created that way or subsequently damaged, can not be considered for the full steps designation.

Full Bell Lines (FBL) - Franklin half dollars. 1948-63, MS60 or better. Exhibit complete, uninterrupted lower lines on the Liberty bell.

Proof Like (PL) - Morgan Dollars.

Clear reflection of field, 2-4 inches away.
A misty effect, or striations may impede the reflectivity.
Deep Mirror Proof Like (DMPL) - Morgan Dollars.
Clear reflection of field at least 6 inches.
Fields are comparable to a mirror, (not a mirror with mist on it and not what a mirror looks like when you step out of the shower).
Must be full, indistorted reflectivity on both the obverse and reverse.
Cameo Proofs (CAM) - 1950-1970 Proof Coinage. As of 9/96 1950 and later also SMA from 1965-67. Send through regrade for designation.

The obverse and reverse must exhibit devices, which are at least lightly frosted and create a contrast with the fields.
Frost on devices may be heavier yet contain areas where the frost is lacking or brilliance is evident.
A coin which exhibits Deep Cameo attributes on one side and Cameo attributes on the other side is considered only a Cameo.
Deep Cameo Proofs (DC) - 1950-1970 Proof Coinage As of 9/96 1950 and later also SMS from 1965-67. Send through Regrade for designation.

Heavily frosted devices on both the obverse and reverse, with no areas of the main devices unfrosted.
Heavy contrast between the fields and devices.
    Copper Coinage -

    BN - Brown
RD - Red - (Worth the most. Both sides must be red).
    RB - Red/Brown
Specimen (SP) - like a proof, granular looking

Circulated Grades - are from poor to AU (About Uncirculated)

Uncirculated Grades - are from Mint State, MS60 to MS70

    Grade Prefix -

MS = Mint State - 60-70. MS struck for business use.
PR = Proof, PR Minted for the collector.
AU = About or Almost Uncirculated - 50,53,55,58
    XF = Extremely or Extra Fine - 40,45 VF = Very Fine - 20,25,30,35 V = Fine - 12-15.
    Fair = 2 and Poor - 1

    Pcgs Coin Lingo

    deep mirror prooflike
Any coin that has deeply reflective mirror-like fields, the term especially applicable for Morgan dollars. Those Morgan dollars that meet PCGS standards are designated deep mirror prooflike (DMPL).
