Variations in 81-S SBA Type II Mint Marks?

Does anyone know if a sub-variety exists in regards to SBAs Type II Mint Marks? I have an SBA where the S is rotated approximately 5 degrees to the left of center and is in a different position when compared to a 81 PCGS graded SBA. Could there be two types of Type IIs?

By the way I've used a microscope @ 20X to examine the mintmarks, but you can also see the differences without magnification.

Thanks
Michael

  • I believe it was Wayne Herdon who said that there are sub-varieties that do exist for the MM.

  • At that time (unlike now), the mintmarks were punched in to the dies by hand, so some variation is normal.

A group of a bunch of variations would be neat, though. But expensive if you did it with 81 Ty2s. image
