Oh noooooo - what is THIS?

Just looking at this beauty and found THIS! What is it? Looks like it's "inside the mirror" - not actually on the surface of the coin. Most angles ytou cannot even see it but held at the right angles - you can.
Anyone know what this is?

Here is a blow-up of the area:

  • First guess - PVC
  • How would PVC get on this? It's been in this slab since the 70's. Before that - it was in uncirculated rolls. Not in PVC.

AND you can only see it if you tilt the coin a certain way. It doesn't appear to be on the surface - more like - inside the mirror - if you know what I mean.

Are you talking about this spot?

Or haze in that general area?

The haze/fog in that general area - it looks sort of greenish but changes a little at different angles. It also dissappears at some angles.

Have there actually been slabbing companies in business since the 70s? I thought slabbing companies were an 80s thing....more like 1985-present.

I'm thinking maybe you've gotten some moisture in the slab.

I lived in Miami for a long time, and whenever a mysterious hazy image appeared on even the most mundane object in that part of the country, it was quickly recognized as the Virgin Mary. It could be that your Morgan dollar has signifigant religious value. I suggest that you offer it on eBay, described as such, and hopefully at least two bidders will agree with you! image

Yeah! You could team up with the whackjob and make it a joint venture.

No. He's referring to haze in that general area.

Oh, the haze? Could be impurities in the alloy or chemical residue from the minting process. Morgans were dipped in acid, covered in bear grease, washed in lye and tumbled in sawdust so It could be caused by anything. Could be an original smear from a fingerprint. Each & every Morgan was handled by a sweating greasy little ole lady who weight it to make sure it was within specs. DMPLs without some kind of haze & spot free mirrors are really hard to find.

  • I've heard of moisture getting into the GSA holders, apparently they were not sealed in the same way as slab holders, might that be a possibility? As for the bump - that might've been a little piece of the die that broke off and some metal flowed into that pocket.
