Looks nice What's it graded MS-62-63? I'm just getting into collecting 2cents and am not real good with grading yet.

Definately not MS. I vote for EF as well. Is there corrosion on the coin or is it just the colors that came out of the photo?

Oh yeah, the bonus on this one is that it's rotated 180.image

  • Oh... is this the mysterious inverted 2cent?

Toldya so... toldya so, toldya so. image
  • Nice coin Russ. I am just getting into the two cent pieces. I was wondering though, is this the large motto type?
I belong to the worlds most elite athletic club. It cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars just to get in and initiation was hell. On top of all that, monthly dues runs about $3000.

    SC,

Yep, this one is Large Motto. Small Motto requires the removal and forwarding of one gonad.

a nice problem free piece, looks to be a strong xf

i think borderline xf. note that there is a die pair for 1864 that only struck 180 rotated dies, but it is neat to have. congrats!

have you got the small-motto yet? that's a tough 1.

I still have both my gonads.

Yeah, I know - you told me that. So, based on your advice, I paid no premium for the coin. Got it for $33.56.image

Looks more au details to me. Seems a bit too shiny though, probably cleaned. I still have my gonads, and a few kids to prove that fact, and I have a couple of small motto's. They aren't that tough image
Did I ever tell the story of finding a small motto ms/64 brn in an ngc ms/64 brn large motto holder? or the same thing with a pcgs holder? Talk about a nice couple of finds.......unfortunately, I am only an acquaitance of the person who accomplished this feat. True story. Still has his gonads too image

    BigD5,

Not that shiny in reality. Nice chocolate brown. I just suck at shooting copper.

  • Russ, I'd give you VF+ to XF, not XF+ nor AU. The horizontal shield lines are beginning to blend, so a full XF would be a stretch. Choc brown is very ok.
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
  • While I am not an expert, or any kind of spurt really, I would have to give this coin a lot on a grading scale. Looking for wear on the high points - it's clear that there isn't too too much. None of the details are worn, and if so very little. Just about everything is clear and sharp with a very little bit of nicks in the fields and a slight softening of the sharp details in the higher areas.

As I sad before, I am no expert on 2 cent peices but have read up on them and looked at a lot of pics.

I'll have to give this one a very solid, based on the picture of course, XF. Possibly even an AU-50, depending on the grading company person's luck the night before or the morning of. image

  • Russ,
I don't know anything at all about grading copper coins and I am not a copper collector. I just want to say, IMHO that is an attractive coin. Not being an investor I buy and collect for appeal. And I like it, a lot.

Well, I take back the cleaned part then. I was assuming the "blending" of the horizontal lines was from the flash of the photo. The coin doesn't show much wear on the leaves, either obv. or reverse.
    Nice coin.

As I mentioned with your other 1864 LM, some of these show up with an Indian Head clash on the reverse. Tough to say for certain due to wear but this one has some close matches, including what looks like the incuse eye next to the 2: compare.
  • Ooops - missed that nick on the shield at 8:45 on the obverse. XF-48 imageimage

    Shylock,

Some newbie questions. What is that? What causes it? And, is it a good thing or a bad thing?

Normally clashed dies occur within the same series, when dies strike each other with no plachet between them, leaving an incuse impression on one or both dies. In rare cases the die from one series is left in the press (in this case the IH 1864 obverse) when changing over to a new series (in this case the reverse of the 2 Cent piece), and for whatever reason strike each other with no planchet between them. There are many clashed die examples of 1864 IHs, and makes you wonder what the heck was going on in the Mint during that year.

An example of the coolest IH clash, which gets variety status, is on the bottom of this page (owned by forum member Lakesammman).

I'm not sure about the value or rarity of the 1864 2-Cent LM clash at lower grades, maybe someone else can help here. To me it adds interest to the coin if not value.

    Shylock,

Thanks. Nice to learn new stuff. I don't really care about any value enhancement, but does that make it go up on the coolness meter?image

Russ -- Makes it totally cool. I don't recommend painting that overlay of the indian on it thoughimage
