Slabbed mercury dimes

Hi guys. I am a 70 year old retired collector who has been collecting mercury dimes in raw condition. Now after seeing what some of the slabbed coins look like, I got the bug.
The only thing is I am strapped for cash. Being retired and on SS, it makes it hard to obtain nice coins. I so have all the silver eagles, some nice morgans and other coins that I could trade for any offered to me that I do not have.
I know this is not the BST forum and I have placed ads there. I would just like to ask the senior members or the board who are experts in the field of slabbed mercury dimes, how they would advise me to proceed. I know that some of the items are way beyond my means and my goal is to get the 40's in PCGS MS66 or better. I would appreciate any advise sent my way.
You can PM me or email at lmello@sc.rr.com. Louie

The short set is from 41 to 45. Are you going to collect the full band or non full band. The full band dimes will cost more.If you decide on the full band the "stopper" coin is the 1945. This is very costly. With a limited amount of money I would suggest the non full band, you might even get a few 67 fairly cheap.

old anacs may be okay but are hard to fine.Fb coins always cost more
and sell for more.the non full band coins of the 40's are abundant
and they don't cost very much, but for future value I would only
buy fb dimes,at least that is my personal opinion.

I pm'd Louie a carbon copy before you posted.Couldn't agree more.Al
The one thing I would say is stick to PCGS. NGC tends to be at least a 1/2 point to a point different and the prices reflect it.
Whichever way you go..enjoy the hunt. You dont have to be a big bucks Merc collector to join in and share the fun as we all chase our sets to completion. We are always comparing, looking, advising each other. The Merc folks here are the best!
I'm going to join in with the others, PCGS and full bands are the way to go. Sure, they both cost a little more, sometmes a lot more. The full band coins are harder to find, but they are just so much prettier, and down the road it will pay off in spades! I am of the opinion that no Mercury dime should make it to a 66 slab without full bands, much less a 68. Believe it or not, today I observed a MS69 no bands for sale! If you are like me, there are certain dates like the 45-P in full bands that you may never be able to justify. I intend to probably settle for a MS67 no bands instead. I also have been collecting raw Mercs for years and am new to slabs. I have several "off brand" slabs that I now know are way over graded. Please learn from my mistakes!!! My Dad always said that if you buy the best, you only moan once!

If the finiancial means you have is as stated I believe your best bet would be to stick with MS66FB coins. Even within this grade you are going to pay some heafty money for some of them. Rolls of these dates still exist and if someone decides to submit one of these rolls it can blow the Population figures clear out of whack and thus the pricing also. My opinion on the 67FB coins is that the Population will stablize in about a Hundred Years and at that time the True value of the coin will also stablize.
If you are collecting for the Beauty of the coin 65FB or 66FB is the way to go. If you are collecting for a return on Investment the dimes in the 40's will only Lose you money or get you break even money at best. As always a couple of exceptions do exist too my previous statement.
My real advice to you about collecting Mercury Dimes would be to forget about the Dimes from 1934 and after and concentrate on the Dates from 1916 thru 1931 in the Best grade you can afford. Some Real Deals exist within these dates if you take your time and compare pricing from different sources. The Key words here are Take Time and Compare Pricing.
Just a VHO and by No Means am I a Investment Counselor

Now the hunt begins. I guess I will follow the sage advice and take my time, but at my age that could be limited. Anyway, many thanks again for all the advice. Now if you experts could only come up with some nice trades of your extra MS65/66 PCGS coins, that would really make my day. Just kidding, of course, but no harm in planting a seed. Louie
I have some extras but if your looking for a "great deal" I have none.Happy hunting.Al
