BVG/BGS Sheet Trimmed 77's

There sure are a lot of these out there...buyer beware...I have purchased six BVG's online in hopes of crossing and have been successful only three times. The other three were trimmed. Usually you can't see it in the scan...you can here--I would wager a sheet cut

The upper left of the Seaver appears to hold the evidence. 77's just don't come with edges like these. I 've broken cases of rack, wax and vending...I had to learn so now I'm passing it along. If the edges look unreal, they probably are.

    Thanks-

BVG has a reputation for doing this -- and some of your that crossed-over successfully still may be suspect. Most of the offenders seem to be with O-Pee-Chee cards, in my experience, so this addition of Topps cards is extremely disappointing to see.

Do cards cut from sheets still have value? Yes -- but not what an originally cut example does.

Has every grading company let these slip occassionally? Yes. However, Beckett seems to have earned a bad reputation for doing this sort of thing...

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • That Gwynn is from a sheet as well - no Gwynn has such full borders, it's centered like 60/60 T/B and 60/60 L/R.
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?
  • You are correct! I'm so 77 focused I didn't even bother to look at the others...

Marc's general, unofficial, not always accurate guideline for identifying a HUGE RED FLAG that a Beckett graded pre-1985 baseball card may have been recently cut from a sheet:

If the subgrade for "Surface" is one half to one and a half grade points lower than any/all the other subgrades -- this is a good indication that the edges and corners were recently created. This is even moreso true if and when the subgrade for centering is 9.5 or 10.
