Take a look at this most interesting coin. Not a mule like the sac, but a true 11 cent coin. After your comments, I will tell you that I know to this point.

Thanks!
Doug

I believe this is a counterfeit.

If it's genuine, that may be the coolest error I've ever seen.

Extremely cool looking! I don't remember ever seeing something like that before.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Seems to me that there were all kinds of fanciful errors 'created' at the San Fran Mint in the '50s. (Yea, I scrolled to the right and read the date on this coin.)
Still it is a neat coin.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?
  • Neat coin. I can't see anything wrong with it, it looks genuine to me.

Coulport, the big period of "created" errors at the San Francisco mint was in the 1965-72 period. I'm not aware of any large number of fake errors for the S mint in the fifties.

The owner of the coin has asked many, including Tom Delorey, their opinion on the coin. The most plausible explanation to date is that it was made with fake Lincoln dies on a real dime. The thought is that the polishing lines on the Lincoln part give it away. These experts have also said that if it is a fake, it is the best fake they have ever seen.

Any more thoughts would be appreciated. My friend has had this since 1973, and has yet to prove or disprove the validity of this error. I told him I would make an effort to find out what others think. Thanks for your opinion so far.

It is a very mysterious and captivating coin to look at in person.

Doug- it's fake. I have seen several identical to that one, so has Fred Weinberg. The dime is real, the overstrike is with fake cent dies.
