I thought I would never hear these words!

To those of you with spouses, I think you'll be able to relate!

I was showing my wife the pic of the awesome 1891 50c toned monster.

1891 50c link

To set the context, I have been recently showing her some pretty high-end stuff that is ridiculously out of our reach (like the Lawrence 1894-S 10c and just about anything from Anaconda). Here is how this conversation went:

Me: Check out this cool looking half dollar.

Mrs: Wow, that is pretty (in a humoring kind of way). How much is it?

Me: About $3,900.

Mrs: Really? That' s not very much for a nice coin like that.

Me: (After picking myself up off the floor). So does that mean I can buy it?

Mrs: Sure (OK, more like a sarcastically dripping surrrrre)

If I wouldn't feel so darn guilty about sidestepping my other family fiscal responsibilities, I might actually buy it! So the lesson learned for all is to set the frame of reference very high and then that $5,000 coin won't seem so expensive! LOL

My wife thinks spending $150 on a roll of "pennies" is ridiculous, forget the fact that I got them 20% back of bid, and there were a number of nice gems in the roll.

Turn the tables, though...when I got another roll for $4 and turned it into $150 from the resulting coins, she thought that was fantastic.

Blade- I won't repeat what Lady Marcovan said when I mentioned the price on that coin! image

Actually, a bad word never escapes my wife's mouth. ("Shoot!" is about her worst). She didn't say anything at all. She just rolled her eyes and looked at the ceiling. image

I do think she said "I don't wanna know," or something to that effect.

Tell your wife I am pleased with her vote of confidence, too. I asked my boss (another noncollector) to pick one, and he went for the half, too. I sometimes use this as a gauge, believe it or not. I don't want a coin that only a collector could appreciate. Take an MS68 Statehood quarter, for example- a noncollector would say,

"Oh, great, a quarter. You paid whaaat for it? Hey, Marge, listen to what this guy paid for a QUARTER!!!"

No, I want a coin even a noncollector would be stunned by. I want a coin that looks like a million bucks. This is one reason for going for a larger sized coin. Packs more wallop. If that were a Seated dollar with those kind of colors...just imagine! (Or the same coin, but with some DCAM contrast... ouch!)

Far as I'm concerned, an MS68 statehood quarter IS worth a quarter. image

To all wives out there. Remember, a pretty dress is just a hunk of cotton, or a new sofa is just a hunk of foam. It's all in the perception. $300 cotton, $1000 foam, $500 coin, it's relative.

    TRUTH
  • I agree. I hear it all the time with friends. "Why would you spend 75 bucks for a penny?"

Well first of all, it is a cent, and I just resold it for 90
Wow, the guy who bought it sure is an idiot!

    Uh, sure.It's is pretty annoying.

  • My wife told my mother in law that "John just paid $100 for a quarter" Now my in laws think I'm a nutcase. I am a nut case, a Very happy nut case.
  • I just got 12 MSRD 29-S lincolns that have the most gorgeous deep red toning and showed them to my wife. She usually just humors me by looking, but she thought these were really neat. I told her they were worth about $150 each and she said "seems reasonable, you should send them in". Thats the first I have heard that.

My wife has come to accept that a large % of our net worth will always be in coins.

She just can't get over that I am not unique. There are others like me.
  • My wife and I have this running joke now that we express the cost of things we do in terms of "Franklin Halves with Roosevelt on them". So for example, she wants to get a carpet shampooer that will cost at least one "Franklin Half with Roosevelt on it" or a trip to New Orleans that will cost at least five "Franklin Halves with Roosevelt on them". It's kind of dumb, but people in love tend to do dumb things, besides, she no longer gives me "the look" when I ask her if it's ok for me to splurge on a coin. Go figure! image

Our carpet shampooer cost me just about half the money I got from the sale of this... image

But I did it to appease the spouse- this is probably the reason why I can now get away with mentioning that I've reserved that $3875 monster 1891 half shown above, and the worst I get is some rolled eyes and a sigh. (With my ex-wife, I would have probably ended up in intensive care if I had so much as looked at such a coin. Maybe that's why she's my ex-wife, huh?) image

Besides, I gotta admit, the carpets look and smell a lot nicer now. image

  • When I show my wife our latest coin purchase, she ask : " How Much Did That Cost Us " ?

She also tells me : " I Can Buy Anything I Want, As Long As It Doesn't Cost Her Anything " !

On the other hand, I measure things in Beers. Do you many Beers that will cost me? image

I am looking for any PCGS MS 70 Silver Eagle.
  • Get ready for the big one!! If my wife said sure get it, it's only 3000.00, she would go out tomorrow and buy that 350Z nissan that she looked at today. What could i possibly say after spending 3 grand on a coin?
