To those of you with spouses, I think you'll be able to relate!
I was showing my wife the pic of the awesome 1891 50c toned monster.
1891 50c link
To set the context, I have been recently showing her some pretty high-end stuff that is ridiculously out of our reach (like the Lawrence 1894-S 10c and just about anything from Anaconda). Here is how this conversation went:
Me: Check out this cool looking half dollar.
Mrs: Wow, that is pretty (in a humoring kind of way). How much is it?
Me: About $3,900.
Mrs: Really? That' s not very much for a nice coin like that.
Me: (After picking myself up off the floor). So does that mean I can buy it?
Mrs: Sure (OK, more like a sarcastically dripping surrrrre)
If I wouldn't feel so darn guilty about sidestepping my other family fiscal responsibilities, I might actually buy it! So the lesson learned for all is to set the frame of reference very high and then that $5,000 coin won't seem so expensive! LOL

Turn the tables, though...when I got another roll for $4 and turned it into $150 from the resulting coins, she thought that was fantastic.

Actually, a bad word never escapes my wife's mouth. ("Shoot!" is about her worst). She didn't say anything at all. She just rolled her eyes and looked at the ceiling.
I do think she said "I don't wanna know," or something to that effect.
Tell your wife I am pleased with her vote of confidence, too. I asked my boss (another noncollector) to pick one, and he went for the half, too. I sometimes use this as a gauge, believe it or not. I don't want a coin that only a collector could appreciate. Take an MS68 Statehood quarter, for example- a noncollector would say,
"Oh, great, a quarter. You paid whaaat for it? Hey, Marge, listen to what this guy paid for a QUARTER!!!"
No, I want a coin even a noncollector would be stunned by. I want a coin that looks like a million bucks. This is one reason for going for a larger sized coin. Packs more wallop. If that were a Seated dollar with those kind of colors...just imagine! (Or the same coin, but with some DCAM contrast... ouch!)

Well first of all, it is a cent, and I just resold it for 90
Wow, the guy who bought it sure is an idiot!
Uh, sure.It's is pretty annoying.
She just can't get over that I am not unique. There are others like me.

<< <i>she wants to get a carpet shampooer that will cost at least one "Franklin Half with Roosevelt on it" >>
Our carpet shampooer cost me just about half the money I got from the sale of this...
But I did it to appease the spouse- this is probably the reason why I can now get away with mentioning that I've reserved that $3875 monster 1891 half shown above, and the worst I get is some rolled eyes and a sigh. (With my ex-wife, I would have probably ended up in intensive care if I had so much as looked at such a coin. Maybe that's why she's my ex-wife, huh?)
Besides, I gotta admit, the carpets look and smell a lot nicer now.
(We have 2 cats, a dog, and a baby, all indoors).
She also tells me : " I Can Buy Anything I Want, As Long As It Doesn't Cost Her Anything " !
On the other hand, I measure things in Beers. Do you many Beers that will cost me?
