It's not a coin, it is a token... not worth an exceptional amount, may not even be gold.

image gold gets dark on the high/rub locations - probably die-struck copy and would have to weigh or get specific gravity to see if really gold - it could be bronze - hope it didn't cost you alot image
  • well my token is dark ..i just found that photo ..we had this thing for years we did not buy it ,i was just wondering what it really was ..

Even though it is just a token, it's still pretty cool.image

Looks like an 1856, not 1956 gold token, many of these were sold as souveniers---------BigE

Following are several reference websites for cal gold. One of particular interest for the topic posted is the second one. This site is a very comprehensive catalog of most known 'tokens' aka fakes. The author of the site has spent many years cataloging the fakes as well as the authentic. There are a great number of fakes sold on ebay similar to this one. There are also many authentic pieces (certified - no question) but there are raw pieces available. You just need to know what you are looking at. Besides these websites (with great pictures and content) there are two good refernece books for calgold :

    California Gold by Kenneth Lee

California Pioneer Fractional Gold by Walter Breen

    and the websites :

    token examples

    another cal site

and also there are some pics in my registry set :
