Do you ever play jokes on your buddies at coin shows?

I just posted something on this subject to another thread and thought I'd pose the question to forum members.

Being of twisted mind, I love to play jokes on my buddies at the show. And one of my favorites is the old, "I just found this on the floor routine".

As is typical with most of us attending shows, we love to scour the floor for great deals. I'm fortunate in that I typically have a few neat coins being held for me until I have a chance to come by and get a look at them.

I just love walking up to my amigos half way through the show and saying, "check this out, just found it on the floor". They're usually left cursing and scratching their heads for not finding the coin themselves.

  • I dropped my pocket piece once (an 1888 Morgan) on the concrete floor once to see what reaction the ring
would get. The general reaction was amusing, the room seemed to take a collective breath while everyone
looked around to see if someone was going to start screaming. My cruel streak shows through sometimes. image

I'd like to see what happens the morning after you epoxy a silver quarter to the floor (just before you leave in the evening, so the epoxy can set overnight). Bwahahaha. It might be fun to have a camera trained on the spot, too. image

  • You should have started sreaming. Then everybody would be interested in what happened. What would be funnier is that the dealers would stop and try to see what they could do. I would like to see their face when you them your 1921 AU morgan now has a huge scratch!

No GSAGuy, I have never joked on the floor. I have been the butt end of several of your jokes but never would I do it myself.......image

Years ago, when I did shows weekly, my buddy and I would tape a string to the back of a dollar bill and put it on the floor in front of our table. When somebody would notice it and bend over to pick it up, we'd pull it away. It was always good for a laugh and to get the people over to look.

I bought a nice MS65 Lincoln Commem from a dealer that I occasionally see at Midwestern shows. After leaving the table, his partner snuck-up to me and explained that his buddy had had a particularly bad streak of luck that week and would I help him to play a trick on him? Not usally one to kick a guy when he's down, I somehow agreed.

So, ten minutes after closing the deal, I sauntered back to the dealer and explained that I had changed my mind and would like to return the coin. His face said it all: "Why me? -- What do I have to do to get a break?-- "You've got to be kididng? etc." All the while, his partner is in the background laughing his a$$ off.

I couldn't keep the charade up. I felt like such a heel and confessed that I had been put up to it. To his credit, he was prepared to take the return without issue. I've since bought other coins from him and have had a great experience every time. As for what he did to his partner to get even, one can only imagine.
