after looking at more proof sets than i'd like to admit to, i feel the mid 80's produced some of the highest quality proofs since the mint improved their process in 1976. other good years are 1978 and 1979 but 1984-86 seem to be the cream-of-the-crop.

Yep, the '80's are nice. Seems like the design change in '91 made it more difficult to produce the nice, thick frost we see on the coins of the previous decade.

That is a beautiful 83, Russ. I always have considered that date to be the ultimate in "cacked on frost".
