superb gem proof monster toned mercury

i am afraid to post this well at least some out there do not know where i live........ i dont want a bullet in my back...........lol come on guys it is only a coin............lol
and yes it is from the eastern collection and was bought from mark feld at pinnacle!! years ago and it is not for sale
nor is it being sold
nor has it been sold................LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL any more information needed please pm me and i am ameinable to take a lie detector test..........lol and yes this is only to showcase a great coin and its qualities for others to be informed and for those that believe no explaination is necessary and for those that do not believe no explaination is possible.................lol here goes!!!!!!!!!!!

this coin currently resides in an ngc proof 67 holder and has super deep mirrors and with little to no frost and no hairlines or marks of any kind on this coin it is medium toned to deep toned blue with other colors a fully original toned coin.

it is to me an easy 68 coin and is cameoed on the obverse and slightly cameoed on the reverse and usually the reverse is cameoed with the obverse not cameoed at all!!!!!

this coin would not get cameo because of the reverse as it is a near miss cameo. the obverse even with the toning is cameoed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the eye appeal is nothing short of fantastic and this coin even with the not quite split middle bands on the reverse is still a 68!!!!!!!! this coin has been acknowledged by a very astute dealer that he has seen all the 68 coins and this one in his opinion is better and i agree! cracked out sent in two times both services for a 68 and still comes back a 67!! at both services

well that was 3 years ago and this coin still is in the 67 holder!.........lol this coin is much better in person sight seen! the eye appeal is just fantastic and i think this coin is close to unique in its look that it is a hard coin for many to understand. i call this coin a monster in terms of overall look toning and super deep mirrors.!!!!!!!!!! and cameoed no brainer on the obverse and just miss on the reverse! even with the toning

actually this coin is worth more out of the holder!! the coin is again much better sight seen the mirrors are liquid which you never ever see on a merc dime proof and on the reverse at 11 pm the line is toning not a mark!!!!!!! and again sight seen is a cameo no brainer in anyones eyes

usually you see blast white dipped mercs 1942 and other dates or hazy coins or coins that are nice but not with much eye appeal or not deeply mirrored etc. this coin is a rare exception that no one understands as it is a stand alone coin in terms of merc dime proofs

oh one curious note this coin has a 25% rotated reverse!!!!!

sincerely michael

Since you're not selling it, may I assume you'll be having a giveaway? image

Seriously, I can see why you're proud of this liberty. It's gorgeous and if there was a "green-with-envy" emoticon on this board, I'd be using it now. Thanks for posting the picture for us.

*sigh* ... maybe someday I might have just one coin that rivals any of the ones you display michael. Please Lord, just one is all I ask. image

Michael, tell me what you think of this bust half I just purchased. It's an au58 slabbed in an older PCGS holder. I am still very green with collecting and I value your opinion so much.

michael Thanks so much for commenting. I was trying for a while to find a nice bust half as I love the series but good ones with eye appeal either were way way over my head or just not around. This really was the only one I could find that captured my taste for what an originally toned bust half should look like. This pic differs from my original in that I had to compress it and resize it enough to attach it so it did loose some detail but as far as I can tell there are just a couple of slight but noticable rubs on the right talon (rev) and on the ear (obv) which might be enough to keep it from MS. I don't know but I really loved the look as soon as I saw it and it was within my affordable price range even though I paid way over sheet for the grade. Others in AU that I saw just didn't compare.

Thanks again and as always I am looking forward to your next writeup as I learn so much from your detailed and colorful commentaries!!!!! image

Great introduction - that should cover just about everything!image
And, like dimeadzn said - since it's not for sale, there must be a giveaway involved - please put me on the donation list.

Both the coins pictured would look nice after a good stell bristle brush scrubbing with Brasso and an application of Stay Brite!

    Michael:

    Thanks for the Picture.

Now if I may I would like to comment on the Grade. The Dime as shown has the obvious Broken Nose effect. If this is from the Camera angle then it does belong in a 67 Holder. If it is from the Coin its self, which it looks like to me, then I believe the Coin is Graded too High.

In My persuit fo Mercs the Broken Nose effect is avoided at all costs. Early dates maybe let it slide somewhat. But in Late Dates and especially Proof Coins this is hard to tolerate.

    Again Thanks for the Post.

    Ken,
Assuming you are correct about the nose in the image, could this be an example of market grading? Perhaps the technical grade is PR68 without the nose, PR66 with it... but the deep mirrors and great color push the eye appeal up to PR67? I'm still trying to get a feel for how much the eye appeal factor adds beyond the technical grade of a coin. Maybe that is the swing point.

IMO (based on having handled dozens of PR67's and a good percentage of the extant PR68's), the condition of MS. Liberty's nose on the coin in question, is irrelevant. That is clearly a case of nitpicking, or perhaps even nose picking.image

    Mark:

If you handle as many Mercs as you have claimed and sell to serious Merc Collectors you certainly know that the Broken Nose effect is not a Nit Picking issue. Very few Merc collectors want the broken nose coins in thier sets unless that is all that is available that the person can find or afford. This is a assumption from myself from being on these forumns with the Merc Registry folks for over a year and collecting the little jewels for over twenty years. I did not want to get into a grading issue but was just makeing a statement that I believe to be very true. image

    Ken,

Based on what you said about the preferences of the guys you talk to (which I will take to be correct), it seems that the Proof Mercs we sell must be going to a different type of collector. We literally, have never been made aware of such preferences from clients who have bought ours. This is actually a good illustration of how many different segments/worlds there can be within a group/ universe of rare coins.

hi there all and loki you have a very good eye!!!!!!!!!!! a very very good eye!

thanks mark i said my commentary too much and now iam just going to let sleeping dogs lie.........lol and even if the coins were for sale or sold which they are not!!!!!!!1who cares! i i choose to post a coin with a description i mean take it for what it is worth.......lol

also concerning the broken nose effect this coin doesnot have this the photo is very deceiving so a moot point but even if it did to me it really doesnot matter for the proofs but of course that is me i have never really heard of proofs being downgraded or not wanted because of the broken nose effect it is really news to me

mark feld put it really well concerning his comments on this proof merc dime !!!!!

and also i suppose that if the coin was a blast white coin maybe it might bother some. but being really deeply mirrored and deeply toned even if so really doesnot stick out so to speak.......lol

since i have never collected or specialized or never owned a ms merc dime i cant say on the mintstate side though but i tend to agree with mark overall

it is interesting that you ken have a real adversion to this but since you are a collector of merc dimes i guess to each his own i personally have not heard of this before though i guess kind of like the full split bands thing at one time the merc dimes were considered nothing without fsb

    Ken,

I guess I will have to start a Proof Broken Nose collection to go with my No Bands collection. Scans make it hard to judge a coin properly.
I know I am worthless at pictures and worse at scans. Given Michael's eye and sources, I am guessing this is a smokin coin seen up close.

    Michael:

Attached will be a comment from David Lange that comes from his Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes. Maybe it will be big enough to read and maybe not. It explains why the Broken Nose effect shows on Mercs. As with any other coin when the Mint employees got carried away with thier Polishing of Dies detail was lost. This is quite common with Mercs whether they be Proofs or Business Strikes.

Please I was giving a opinion that is wide spread about this effect on Mercs. Not only do I have a Adversion to lack of Detail on coins because of the over zealous die polishing that occured in the past but Many other collectors do also. This IMO stands true for any series of coins.

The Coin is very pretty but just lacking full detail.
