Best value in a given series?

What grade do you think represents the best value in the series that you collect? In my opinion, MS64 Liberty Double Eagles and MS64 Barber halves are good values considering that an MS65 will cost more than double.

When I decided to start a set in PCGS slab's I decided that it would be in MS 66. I'm on a budget and this is a great grade to collect in. I have amost 50% of my set done and so far its been less then 600 Dollars.
Some day I may move up to 67's but thats later.

I'm building my Walker short set in MS64. If you shop carefully, there are some very pretty coins in that grade, and the price seems to jump quite a bit moving to 65.

Franklins in MS64FBL's. Killer deals and in this grade one can find some super nice looking coins......

Best value? Id pick a 1859-S in XF45/AU50 over a 1891 in say MS67. To me, value is in rarity.

The idea is to cherry pick the nicest coin in the grade JUST before the big jump in price. This grade could be AU58 or MS64 or MS66 depending on the series and/or the date in the series.

I'm with The Cool Kitty from Hepcat City on this one. With the exception of the 53-S, MS64 FBL Franklins provide good value and collecting fun.

Agree with Jom on this. I collect type, so here goes:

Capped Bust / Reeded Edge Type - MS 64
Trade $ - MS 64
Seated $ - MS 63
SLQ - MS 65 FH
Liberty Nickel - MS 66 They're expensive, but so scarce, they're worth the $ IMO
Barber Type - MS 65

...also, type gold in MS64 seems to be a good value, as there is a big jump in price going to 65 for many series.

jom's got the right idea...there is a lot of value built into a coin like that, and
it's usually an easy sale should you decide to sell!

With regard to the Lincoln cents, I have to have a red coin, and those get pricey in the higher grades....but if you can find a good MS63RD, that's pretty much a bargain over the other reds for the same series (talking about the earlier dates here).

In Indian Head cents, I would say AU55 is the best way to go. Just a little wear on these only shows in a couple of places, and the coins are a steal against the MS prices for the same dates.

2 sets that I feel are a good value are the Walking Liberty Halves, short set in MS64, and the Franklin Halves in MS64FBL. Prices jump considerably the next grade up in both sets. I have just started working on them, and so far I have been able to get 2 Franklins, both MS64FLB, for under $20 each. Jump up to MS65FBL, and prices average in the $100's.

Sorry I have to disagree with the last few. Common date Walkers in MS64 are not the best value. They are so common they will not go up in price much. I guess they are a good value if you want 1 nice looking Walking Liberty half for your collection and don't want to pay much. For me, I like Peace dollars around $400 in MS64 which jump to $4,000 to $10,000 in MS65.

Check the pops and then the prices ... there are downright steals to be made on 60-64 PR-68 non-CAM and CAM Jeffs; in the '50s, PR-66 CAM coins can be had for amazingly cheap prices. Still beautiful coins with nice contrast in most cases. Price jumps dramatically at PR-67 CAM and up ... These coins are set to spiral with any redesign of the Jeff and a growing interest in the series; prices driving higher in recent months, particularly on the 30s and 40s PR-67s ...

I agree proof Jeffs seem like a great value in 2'nd highest grades.

Especially cameo SMS Jeffs, they are much less than proofs with similiar populations.

For the money you can't beat MS65-66 Franklins (non FBL) and Kennedy's - these are high end pieces that are in my mind are highly undervalued. From what I've seen, 1879S - 1882S Morgans in MS64 DMPL also seem like a great deal at today's prices.

I would agree with this statement if you are talking about a semi key or key date in the series. I couldnt agree that a common date XF-AU is a "best value". I have lost $$ on several of my common date seated dimes, never have I lost 1 cent on a key or semi key date. They retain value MUCH better/
