Dipping for a few minutes in acetone will remove PVC without damaging the coin, but for copper coins, it is often the case that the PVC build-up has damaged the surface of the coin, so there is little recourse.

Acetone should be your number 1 friend. And a coin can be kept for days in acetone. It does not damage the coin in any way. If the coin has a lot of PVC, change the acetone out every once in a while. And when you are done, rinse the coin in fresh acetone.
