Unusual Toning on clad Ikes - AT/ Real / or just the lighting?

I've never seen this color on clad circulation strike Ikes. Can't tell exactly what it is but for the price, I thought I'd chance it.

Any opinions from the toning or Ike experts?

Linky

Thanks

Michael

i'd like to first add the disclaimer as to not being a toning or ike expert.

i've seen it quite a bit on mint set coins. all it takes is a small hole in the cello. i have some 1971 coins with purple/gold/blue around the rim, very faint but still visible. and those are roll coins. i'm sure supercoin can tell of different colors he's seen. to think i used to believe clads didn't tone. altogether now, i'm a believer...........

It's the lighting. What you're likely to get are two Commercial Unc Ikes that are clad brilliant.

  • Poor lighting and poor pictures - looks like maybe someone broke open one of their old bankrolls - but you never know! good luck!

I can't be certain, but it looks like a color correction issue. Most people forget that all digital devices have color bias in one area or another depending on quality, lighting, etc. And even when it is adjusted, it's technically only correct for the person's monitor and viewing environment that corrected it.
  • I'm not sure I'm seeing the same thing as you... golden toning is common on Ikes.

Also, the 72-P doesn't look Unc, though it's hard to tell from the photos.

Maybe it's my monitor, but I see more of a rose color. Anyway, if they are golden I'm fine with that.

Supercoin, while I have your attention, an ANACS 1973 PR69 Hvy Cam, with a faint rainbow tone and DDR, is that a fairly decent coin?
I pulled it from a $12 proof set @ Long Beach. I just don't know the value of something like that. A little help?

    Thanks

  • Can't beat the price! image I'm assuming you're talking about a 1973-S Silver proof. The DDR probably doesn't do much for value... there are a ton of DDs in the proof series and generally not widely collected. The most dramatic (and it's not very) is a 1971-S variety that does bring a premium. They can make for an interesting study, though.

Aside from that, high-grade ANACS Ikes are largely valued on their likelihood of getting into a PCGS holder of the same grade. A nice 1973-S Silver PCGS PR69DCAM is a bit under $100.

No, I'm talking about a clad 73, Pr69 Hvy Dcam DDR, with rainbow toning.

What do you think? That's got to be unusal, don't ya think?

  • A 73 Clad (again in a PCGS PR69DCAM holder) is a better date proof in high-grade DCAM, say about $200, or more for an exceptional one.

And depending on what you mean by rainbow toning, could be significantly more.

    Sounds interesting! Got a photo?
