Population numbers

Are population numbers becoming increasingly inaccurate due to crossovers and crack-outs? What, if anything, do you do with the population numbers reported by the grading services? Perhaps auction archives would be a better way to assess a coin’s rarity?

Only a significant problem with coins minted prior to 1963 in some series and about '47 in most others. Only then will coins sell for enough of a differnce to justify the crack-out game.
  • I am faced with an interesting dilemma using pop numbers. I am collecting a classic proof series in CAM and DCAM. The PCGS has only been attributing CAM and DCAM for about 2 years now, the NGC for about 4 years. Judging rarity for CAMs and DCAMs for each date has involved some guess work. NGC census numbers are starting to show which coins are indeed tougher CAMs so I tend to use their numbers as a guide more so than the PCGS.

Another problem with CAM and DCAM designations on classic proofs is that a lot of coins are getting cracked out and dipped with the owner hoping to make that DCAM grade. I think that this will really throw off pre-WWI silver proof pop numbers.

Since I started collecting my series about a year before the PCGS began adding CAM and DCAM designations I have overpaid for coins that aren't as rare in CAM as was believed and I have underpaid on some coins that are proving to be tougher than was believed.

Auction records may prove to be useful in determining rarity; they could be another tool to use along with pop numbers. Even careful study of a series using all the resources available can prove to be misleading as to true rarity. I have seen and heard of several cases where hoards of coins that were once considered rare have surfaced.

you make some very valid points michael

and also the proofs pre 1915 CAMEO in general are common coins likewise the silver proofs in deep cameo 1896 and 1898 some other dates also!

i think many deep cameo proofs that were deep cameo before pcgs designatyed them such were graded like 67 and higher so you may see a few more get resubmitted in their holders and get the deep cameo with a point
reduction in the numerical grade but make the deep cameo as before they designated deep cameo at pcgs pcgs would reward a coin like a point higher if it was a really deep cameo and certainly i would agree with that logic in market grading as the deep cameo if the coin was a super nice 65 deep cameo i could see 66 on the holder without no designation as such for deep cameo as pcgs didnot have such a designation proir to june 1 2001 that is the first day they started yo grade deep cameo and cameo for pre 1950 proofs
soooooooo it has been 1 year and 4 months for pcgs grading deep cameo and cameo for pre 1950 coinage and about 3and one half years for ngc!!!!!!!!1

sincerely michael and of course the above comments concerning deep cameo and cameo coinage and the rarity thereof is just my own opinions based on what i have seen in the holders and my own expereinces as such

Pop numbers are only a guide. I don't think living by the numbers is a good idea. I know it doesn't work on the crap tables in Vegas!!!!

i think popnumbers are a great starting point but you have to remember that there are many pops that are way ioverstated due to some sending in coins many times to get graded and then not returning the tags and then trying to buy the others graded with many thinkiing oh he might have three but the pops say 10 so there are outhers out there and really there are not as this person/dealer has the three coins graded and the other are the seven crack out tags he then returns the tags and then he has the only three coinc sfinest graded for example this is done all the time

also many coins if you specialize in a certian series and have understood the market and
other factors realize that for many coins the pops are not accurate like ms 64 flyers the pops are way overstaed by like 40% or more which i will not go into now as it would be an extremely long post....lol

same with early commems the pops for many are overstated in 64 65 like 35% 40% or more!

and the list goes on and on for miles

i guess the pops are okie for certain series and it has shown some coins are much lower pops then originally thought but then again if you get some of the coins together some may be overgraded/undergraded or not as nice or not even close to others so it is really a thing where you need experience and learning and to specialize in a particiular coin and then the pops do not mean much if you see a coin for example that is a large pop yet you look at the coin in the holder and say wow this is the finest i have seen! then the pops be damned

but i must admit the pops are very important for most coins and i do look at them and comapir and it does help me in my pursuits and decsisons in coins

but in the end when all is said and done never worry too much about pops or rarity or lack thereof just only buy great coins coins with monster super exceptional eye appeal!!!!!!!! in general you cant go wrong! as long as you approach it with monry that you can afford to lose and only buy for a hobby and something that you really enjoy and can live with a long time then by all means buy it! if you say yes to all these above qualifications!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    sincerely michael
