Of Interest to Some People. NGC Conserved Dimes.

Hello Folks:

Well it Only took 5 Months but the Dimes I had a dealer send to NGC for Appearance Review finally got back to thier home today. Obviously these went through the NCS process of conservation and kept thier original grade.

The 27D was very Lackluster and IMO, and I like Tone, was not attractive. Well now it is Blast White or maybe even Whiter than that. Here are the Before and After pictures of the Dime.

The next one was the 29S MS67 Merc that had developed some spots that were bothering me appearence wise. The Tone I could live with but it was not real appealing either. Had some reservations on whether they would conserve this coin as it is a Pop 4 Coin at NGC and was in a Older Slab. Well it made the grade again. Still a Pop4 at NGC and a Pop 0 at PCGS. White is a under statement for this one also. Also have before and after pictures for this one.

All in all I am pleased with the results. For sure the coins are more Eye Appealing even though they are White as a Ghost. image

  • Ken,

Very nice looking coins. But the whiteness just isn't you. Perhaps you should send them my way and I'll nestle them in with my white ones so they don't feel left out. image

But seriously, very nice looking coins. NCS did a real nice job for you. image

Let me clear up the 5 Months it took. In no way was that NGC's fault. The Dealer I used is Flakey, Nice Guy, but just Flakey. I know he has had the dimes back from NGC for 3 Months. Heck for all I know maybe he did not submit them for a month after getting them.

    Hello Ken,

WOW! They did a great job from the looks of the photos. I think you did the right thing having it cleaned, eye appeal just wasn't there for me on the toning.

    Wow, what a difference!

Do they offer a warrantee against the coins re-toning? Do they suggest any special storage to prevent them from re-toning?

Remarkable pictures, you have convinced me to send in my 16-s's. Why did you go through a dealer?
  • Those obverses weren't pretty. But looks like they cleaned up real nice. They definitely look better after.

I'm glad there are services out there that can do this for you. What can they do with coins that develop haze. Will they also be able to restore them, and will they be "slabbable".

    Great thread. Thanks.

  • NICE coins now! Now if you can cross them...lol.... I would like that 27D, since it white now, of course after its in a pcgs holder...image

Thank you for the important information, I think this thread will make NCS a new name on the block, I know I am waiting for them to answer a few quetions for me,before I send them a few, but it has been over a month with no response. Oh well, I guess they are too busy to answer emails. I will wait.

    Dennis:

With the information, some from yourself, that has been received on the different forumns at this time I believe it is completely Hopeless to submit these coins for Cross Over. I believe the 27D is a 64 coin in anyones holder but as we all know that is just a opinion. For sure a much better looking coin.

    Mike:

A moment of weakness when I was standing in front of the Dealer. He is a guy I like and was going to Long Beach the following week so I thought this would be a faster route seems how he could submit them right there. From now on I will do these things myself. Also these were sent for a appearance review which I believe they can say Yes or No right on the spot.

I own a 1949d NGC ms65 50c which I had bought in the days before NGC designated FBL. I sent it back to NGC about 4 years ago for FBL designation. The coin had relatively unattractive streaky/blotchy brown toning over gray-white surfaces (similar to your coins though not as extensive). Someone at NGC called me up and indicated they would like to improve the coins appearance by conservation (dipping the coin to remove the toning) and would do so at no additional charge. I agreed, and the coin returned to me was blast white. In the ensuing years, the coin has started to retone and as I recall, is starting to look similar to pre-conservation. The holders are not impervious to gas infiltration, so I suspect your 10c will eventually retone. This may not happen as quickly as in my case, since there has been improvement in holders. It would certainly happen quickly if you ever removed coins from holder. I have also had experiences with older NGC holders which contained blast white coins which had apparently been dipped just prior to certification. After several years, the coins retoned within the holders. I recall a group of 42s 10c which were bought blast white, but were toned deep blue within several years while residing in NGC holders.

The emergence of the detail on the reverses, after conservation, is incredible. I wonder if NCS uses that one molecue thick polymer that was being talked about a while back as a means of preventing further degradation of mint luster? I sent in a few coins to NCS, they conserved about 15-20% of what I sent. I was very pleased with the results I got. The only one that bummed me was a raw MS63/64 Seated Half that I bought at a Superior Auction. It came backed as a body bag, "cleaned". It does have a bit of an aritficial look about it, but I thought it was pretty minor. Still, I can't disagree with their opinion. Very nice dimes Fairlaneman, Mark
