Thank you all! We survived Lili!!!!

All,

We've been without power since the storm on Thursday but finally had it restored yesterday. The clean up is now underway and it will take some time. The look of our neighborhood has probably changed for a long while as many major oak trees were destroyed.

While we had significant damage to our home, no one was injured. In fact, I haven't heard of any deaths attributed to the storm which was amazing considering the damage left in its wake.

I want thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers and am trying to answer each of my PM's.

  • Thanks for posting! I'm sure we all are very pleased that no one was injured, I certainly am.

I admire the human spirit. The positive, can do attitude of so many Americans really helps me stay optimistic.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I would echo Carl's statements. Truely great news that there were no injuries considering the pounding that you and your neighborhood withstood. Let me know if I can help (need a long extension cord from Calif. but always worth a chance asking).image

Good luck to you and your neighbors.

    Tom.
  • Hi Bryan,

Glad to hear you survived the storm. It could have been much worse-easy for me to say, sitting here in gorgeous San Diego.

Coin collecting can be a good panacea for stress. I hope you are able to relax during this tough time.

Hope to see you again soon.

    Best wishes,
    Barney

Amazingly, we never lost phone service through the storm because the phone cables are buried! I did finally run out of battery power on my machine and had no where to charge them up. Most of the city was without power for days! In fact, I went to the Post Office today and they STILL don't have power. However, they were working through it.

Thanks again all, it's been an adventure to say the least.

So what happened to your house? In the pict it looks like a tree was on the roof but you said a tree was in your bedroom, how bad was it?
Glad to get the AC back on too, huh? image

    Dog,

The tree collasped the roof over the bedroom and drove some of the studs through the ceiling and down into the room. Of course, it then rained into the house.

We managed to cut the tree out of the attic and then had a crane lift the trunk off the roof. We then covered the damaged area with plastic and are awaiting contractors for quotes and the insurance adjuster to visit.

The local tree guys are screwing everyone but I hooked up with a great crew out of N. Georgia. These boys have the right tools and attitude and are kicking butt in this neighborhood. I've helped them land 5 or 6 other major jobs and they plan to stay in the area for weeks. Again, the damage is really extensive throughout the area.

  • GSAGuy,

As someone who had Fran walk through his back yard, and was without electricity for 12 days, I feel for your situation and the cleanup tasks ahead of you.

I'm sincerely glad that everyone made it out OK! My prayers were answered.

If I can help in some way, please don't hesitate to ask.

Glad to hear things are getting back to normal, although I think "normal" may be a while, considering the tree. Good luck to you!!

Nice to see you make it through gsaguy!

I did hear of a couple of deaths attributed to CO poisoning due to running electrical generators indoors so I suppose you could say they were "storm-related".

    Loki,

You're right. I know of at least one death from CO poisioning and a bunch of people in the hospital for same. Just not too smart to run an internal combustion engine in confined spaces.

Merz2, Hammond is only about 2 1/2 hours from here by car but they were lucky. Probably received only some minor winds and rain. It was just amazing to watch as these 80-100 year old oak trees fell one by one. We saw a total of 4 blow over...the last of which hit the house. But our neighbor's damage was much worse as his home was cut in two.

Anyway, it's nice to be back on the boards and trying to focus on coins once again....at least for a few hours.

Glad you didn't get any major damage to your house. We didn't get anything over here. While you guys were getting hit we were working on the beach. Since I'm in the construction biz I was kinda hoping it would stall, build up and come this way.

GsaGuy I'm happy to hear that your family is doing ok despite the fact that you had a tree in your house. Be sure to report those jerks to the feds, when they show up. When Opal came through this area in the 90's the feds ripped a new one to the companies that ran up prices for supplies and services.

  • Yes, price gouging is illegal, especially during times of need such as this. Same thing happened when Alicia knocked out power in Galveston County. The clean up was ongoing, but it was earlier in year, so much, much hotter - and they were price gouging ICE real bad. And we had to boil water for quite awhile or use bottled water. It was horrible. The phone lines were long - we took turns standing in phone lines and ice lines in the boiling heat. GOOD LUCK to you in getting your roof repaired expediently. What a hassle! Glad nobody was hurt. Do you think you will stay for the next storm? image
