Where did this set come from?

Did you see there is a new Walker set in the number 1 current position?

the cajun collection

I wish we could see the list!

We have the set ranking and point total, so that is all that matters. It's the PCGS way. imageimageimage

Hidden sets should not be listed in the Top 20. They should be listed in a different section.
  • Why bother to register a set if you won't show what's in it?

I've often felt that way, and asked High Desert the same question once. He had his reasons. If I had the finest set around, I would want to show it off. That's part of the appeal of the Registry- maybe the number one reason for it, I would think. But to each his own...

The reasoning of not wanting to get jacked on the only coins the collector needs isn't enough, in my opinion, to allow closed sets.
If you are going to register your set then COMPLETELY register it- open for all to see.
Or, keep it locked in your safe, private and off the internet.

I agree. Hidden sets should not be allowed. When I see a hidden set I assume that there must be a dog or two in the set that the owner can't bear to show the world.

I also agree, "Hidden Sets" should not be allowed in the #1 position. If these people want to Hide their sets, let them do it, until they reach the #1 spot, them make it mandatory that they reveal their set to the public. If everybody on the Registry decided today to Hide their sets today, what purpose would the Registry serve ???

I'm not sure how I feel on this one. The collector in me wants the sets to be visible, but the privacy advocate in me supports the rights of those who wish to keep them hidden. Tough call.

    Good question.

The point of building the set complete before posting it and then posting it and hiding it at the same time has me confused. I would have rather seen the set build over time and reach number 1 and than hide it.

It is his or her right. It just seems pointless.

Russ, I too am quite an advocate of privacy issues. However in this case, you have every right to keep the contents of your set private by NOT posting it at all. I would feel much differently if sets were posted by anyone other than the owner. But the way things are set up, I could be as private as I wanted to be by not typeing the coins in in the first place. My Proof $3.00 gold coin set is private, and that is my choice and nothing this thread has advocated will affect it in anyway.

Now should they not be allowed? Heck I don't know. I don't like it, but as it seems that more and more sets are being listed this way, SOMEONE must like it like that. It's going to be pretty funy when one of these days you go look at some of the collections and it's only going to be 4 or 5 of us who will make their sets visible.
  • Geez people.......... did anyone participate in the Registry the first few years when every set was "hidden"????????

<< <i>We are publishing the Set Registry in this early incarnation in order to encourage participants in the Set Registry program, gather more information about complete sets of United States coins, and give recognition to the fabulous sets that we do know about now. >>

Sounds like we lost something along the way and have become a bunch of whiners! image

Edited to add this quote came from the 1998 printed 1998 PCGS Set Registry - note was even called Set Registry back then.

  • I think we have to respect a person's right to privacy, and there can be many
different reasons for someone not wanting to make their set publicly available
    for viewing.

If someone puts together a #1 set, but chooses not to display it, they should
still be recognized for their achievement. Many are no doubt very dedicated
collectors who take great pride in sharing their sets (and their #1 certificate)
    with family and close friends.

On the other hand, if PCGS were to mandate that all sets, or just #1 sets, be
made available for viewing as a stipulation of participating, there's nothing
    wrong with that either.

One thing that might be nice, would be more options when listing your set. Right
now, it's either all or nothing. If someone just wanted to hide the grades, for
instance, they could still be allowed to include a nice description of the set, and
perhaps even pictures of some/all of their coins.

And while the programmers are making that change, they might as well go ahead
and add the ability to include a more complete description of individual coins. Perhaps
by clicking on the date of each coin listed in a set, a new page or popup window could
be displayed, showing the pics and description for that coin! image

I like to see the list also but when I first listed my set I had it hidden and it was #1. The reason was I was still looking for one coin with a population of 6. Letting everyone know what coin I was looking for was very likely to drive up the price of this thinly traded piece. I would not have listed my set at all if it had to be open.

As for the particular set in question however, it is difficult to guess their reasons. It is not likely that any one persons needs will change the market on Wallkers.
