Ideal Toning - what do you look for?

OK, so as we learn about toning, what do you look for? Obviously there is going to be eye appeal to everyone in different ways - but what are some of the toned coins that make you go WOW? - It would be a great learning experience if some of you would post pictures of some of your own favorite toners!

Thanks!

Frank

This is a little jewel I picked up on eBay. I look for the cresent pattern with the progressive rainbow colors. I worry about the coins with scrambled colors running every which way. They're really beautiful but................are they real?

Rim toning w/white centers or bullseye toning.

That's a cool one, MrLee! That's the kind I like. I collect Morgans. I don't care much for the green monsters but I like crescents, endrollers, and periphs especially if the periphs are bullseyed. I like weird & unusual patterns too. Like this 83-CC GSA. You don't see this everyday. I like my DMPLs blast white however.

Thanks Dog. I picked that up on ebay a few months ago for $26. I couldn't believe it. Yours is quite unusual. You don't see many like that.
But like you said, nothing beats a Blast White DMPL. image

Hey Dog, that is a pretty nice Morgan, kindda marble-like on the toning, is the toning thick or can you see luster shine through?

It's so thin that you can see the silver underneath, but it's not one of those you have to tilt & turn & catch the light just right to see colors and when you tilt it you can see the cartwheel effect go round & round. I still remember the eBay descripition, the seller said it looked "like an AT expermint gone horribly wrong."

You can't "look" for toning- you just see it and you know.

Hmmm...... Almost anything. Sometimes even get caught with a AT Coin that fooled the Eyes.
  • Gotta be attractive to my eye, beyond that the more difficult it is to find the series (or even the particular date) with nice toning, the better, i.e. I'd pay a lot more for a rainbow Peace dollar than a rainbow Morgan.

    Here's an Ike I like that I don't think I've posted before:

    Dog:

No one liked it on Ebay. Scarfed it up real quick. Saw a 35D with the same Tone Color and pattern about a week later but seems how it was graded higher and a little better date it got out of hand price wise. Last night I believe a 46D Walker with the same pattern also went on Ebay. The Walker was Hyped for the Tone though. The 41P is for sure one of my favorites along with the 35D shown.
