lincoln cent

ebay item #1386159656 Does this cent look OK to you guys ? To me it just seems to have a artificial look as if it is waxed or something. Maybe it is just a really nice coin. Some of you copper guys please give me your expert opinion. Thanks...Pat

Just did a search on ebay...if you go to U.S. coins then search PAPA you will find a bunch of nice lookin coins. His feedback seems ok. Think I'll try a couple of his lincs just to see how they look in person.

I'm no Lincoln expert, but it does look like it's been waxed.

I have bought a few Papa Tony's coins. Every one came back body bagged for one reason or another. Most older ones were for questionable color, or cleaning.

If anything the picture is deffinantly touched up. I would not purchase this coin, even if not for the gouge in Lincolns head.

Good luck on your purchases and let us know how they come out.

If this guy has such cherry coins, why does he not submitt them to PCGS and get 5X the amount he would pull down raw?

I don't know, something seems fishy.

But I have been known to be wrong in the past.

Just a thought here, contact the seller and ask him to garentee the coin will grade (Note I said grade, not a certain grade, just not body bag)

Some sellers will do this, some will not.

Unless you can walk it through 10 days is not enough time to submitt the conventional way.

I have yet to buy a raw MS copper coin on eBay that I didn't have to return. It seems the two don't go together very well at all.

A friend of mine soaked some wheaties in copper cleaner then washed em in his dish washing machine. They look just like this penny.

The coin doesn't look right. Look at the lack of details in the hair. I think it's been cleaned.

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw the auction. This coin is either treated with Blue Ribbon and the oil is still thick, or it has been lacquered, or both. From the looks of things, an obviously cleaned coin.

  • Papa Tony, AKA Greg sells some good coins. Some of his older coins were cleaned at one point (Indians and a 1918) but he will take back any coin if you are not happy. Most of the coins in my registry came from him. I have 6 MS 65 1954 Lincolns all for under $20 each. The 37-S I believe you are talking about is actually from a roll I helped broker for him. Some solid coins in the roll. If you are looking for a 67 you are probably out of luck but a 66 for sure on this particular date. I bet if you asked him to guarantee the coin will grade by PCGS he would do it. I have often asked him why he has not sent in coins for grading and grading costs are probably the biggest reason, especially when you consider what most of these coins sell for all ready slabbed. Certaily the 54s, the 2 66RD 52's and the 2 66RD 49-P's he sold me would have been worth while but for a good portion of the dates the premium is just not there. Not too long ago he sold some 41 DDO's he found, 3 to be exact, 2 came back 65RD and one came back 66RD and he kept the best 3. He is currently sending me a dozen 29-S's to give my opinion on sending into PCGS and I am trading a 1927 and 1910 for the pick of the litter. For 1934 to 58 his coins are usually really good bargains. I have litterally purchased over 200 coins from him and only had 2 BB's, one was solid and should not have come back, a 41-D I believe and the other was a 43 D/D steel wheatie and I still don't know why it came back, tough coin and a bummer for Greg in the days when he did not search for errors.

Looked at the coin closer since my last post. Its the strike on this coin. I have personally looked at this roll and they are original. The pick of the litter was my payment at the coin is at PCGS right now.

BTW the 1937's he has are super cherry and he is not joking. MS66's for sure has had 6 rolls of them and could easily have put an entire roll of 66's together from the bunch.
  • Thank you all for your input. I did email the seller as was suggested earlier in this post.He fell slightly short of accually saying he guarantees they would grade. However,he did say that he has had several graded for his own collection and if I sent any in for grading that got bagged he would be willing to work it out with me.He also told me if I was unhappy with any of his coins he would give me a full refund,no questions. So I think i'll try a few of them to see what happens. I asked him why he didn't get them certified as he could get much more out of them and he said he really wasn't into plastics and he thought the slabbing craze was taking it's toll on the hobby. He also said he is averaging 15 to 20 bux per coin raw and due to the slabbing fees it isn't worth it especially with the common dates. I guess I can say I personally agree with some of his thoughts. Most of us are well aware of how hard it is to find a source of reasonably priced raw coins nowadays. I'll let you all know how this ends up. Now don't you all be snippin' me !! imageimageimage
