Over 1000 new sets in 3 months. Are these new people or new sets?

Back in June PCGS was having a contest for the 3000th set.

Today there are 4155.

Are these new people adding their sets, or are they the same people just adding to new PCGS sets?

Anybody have any ideas?

I wonder how many of the 4155 is more that 50% complete. How does one coin make a set? I can see two coins maybe.

  • I think it's a combination of both. Back in June, I had three sets working. Today, I have 5 so you do see people expanding their collecting habits. That being said, I have also see quite a few new people add in sets in the series that I collect. So I guess I'm going to leave your question right were you did. Beats me where they are comming from! image

The number of sets to register in has also expanded. For example, the 1936 to 1959 proof sets, and the 1936-42 and 1950-59 composit sets. So in many cases we have people who've been here all along, but have registered additional (but not duplicate) sets.

Since the end of June, I added 2 sets, and deleted 2 that only had one or two coins. I had those coins for type set purposes, but I never planned on completing the series so I took them off. I expect the number to increase slowly over the coming months, and maybe a quick upward movement near the end of next June as the 2003 Registry contests comes to an end. Mark

I've added 10 sets over the past couple of months, bringing my total to 19. The most recent were the proof sets from 1937-1952, and Buffalo nickels. The early proof sets are not complete now, but will be someday. It's a good way to keep track of which coins I have (and need).

When mint sets are added, you can expect another surge in the number of sets. I imagine a lot of people have formed sets from their birth year.
