  • Welcome to another Merc collector! It sounds like you will be buying lots of coins to get into the top 15 within one year. You said by the end of the year. If that is this year you really have to buy quickly to achieve that goal. My advice is to always take your time.

Are you the J. Stevens set? If so you have a decent start...

I do have one "blast white blazer." It is a 1929 in PCGS MS 65 FB.

I also have a tougher one but it has a little white toning. It is a 1928-S in PCGS MS 64 FB.

  • I forgot to suggest turning on your PMs (Private Messages). You can do so buy clicking on the "Profile" tab just under the Navigation bar near the top of the threads and selecting "Allow Private Messages" in that page.
  • thanks for the kind words. I like to set goals for myself so I will work a little harder at achieving things so that is why I want top 15 by years end.
  • quick question how do i make the link to my set in my signature instead of a long address?

    thanks
  • Welcome to the best group on the boards (image)...I will keep an eye out for you, on the favorites of mine.. Blast White! (sorry Ken)image

    JB,

Welcome to the group. You've set an ambitious goal for yourself. Good luck with it.

I see that you're going for high grades, but not necessarily FB's. I like FB's, but will settle for a non-FB coin if the difference in price seems too much. Buy the highest grade you think you'll ever be able to afford the first time, and you won't be faced with upgrading a lot of coins later on.

  • I'd sell you the 1941-D MS67FBL from my personal type set if you're willing to pay a bit of a premium for a blazer (I did)...

The small mark in the reverse field by E in AMERICA is all I can see keeping it from an even higher grade. Send me a PM or e-mail if you're interested.

Good luck in your quest! image
  • Welcome and good luck. Depending on your coin budget, finding all blast white might be a little more challenging. That is the way I started my collection, Now I've changed it to blast white is a preference but will also buy lightly toned because sometimes that white can be a little elusive. And another problem that I and most others run into is the "Common Dates" sometimes aren't that common like the 39-S in FB and there are a few other dates. It's taken a lot longer than I thought it would. I've got most of mine online, finding them at coin shows is next to impossible and through the local dealers is just as bad. If you buy from Teletrade beware that they don't always accurately discribe toning on the coin, if they even mention toning at all, but it's usually light toning. My personal favorite is Heritage. 90-95% of my set came from them. Well enough said from me.image

coco, i agree with you on the fb coins and am leaning towards those when i can. i really don't mind upgrading coins down the road for nicer fb ones (i enjoy the hunt).

    thanks

There are A LOT of Mercury collectors on this forum, and the number is growing! image

I happen to like the design, but prefer the Proof issues.

    Good Luck on your goal.

  • To make your link work, copy this:

    Name of Link

All you need is the [L]...[/L]. And you can put a label on the link where it says "Name of Link". Delete it, and put what you want. It will show up on your signature line, like "Proof Dime Registry Set" in mine.

You can't believe how happy I am to hear that you want to be somewhere between 12 and 17 at the end of the year. I'm number 11. Just remember the rules, use singles when passing someone.image
