1964 Half error that I actually found in a roll

Was going through a roll of 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars and found this coin. Finding this myself makes it 10 times cooler than buying it.

Usually on a coin like this I think struck through grease but after looking at it maybe there was a piece of paper between the planchet and the die. What do you guys think?

By the reverse image you can say ,yes its heavily grease-filled die.
The obverse just looks funky, worn / stained /circulated.

Somewhat of a minor error as far as errors go,so the more dramatic the more value most of the time.
That reverse is fairly dramatic to me.imageimageimage

Thanks Cam. The obverse is a nice BU coin. It just didn't scan well.
  • The "B" in "LIBERTY" also looks like a partly filled die to me. Thanks for sharing the neat half.image
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.

ya,sorry .Looking at the obverse first does give the impression of a normal abuse circ Half.
but I think, the reverse tells the story pretty clearly as to whats up with this coin,

I know a board member who would list it on eBay as "AMAZING KENNEDY SNEEZING HALF" for about 100k.

    Hey that's pretty cool!
I say greasy die-what makes you think paper?

On reconsideration I have to agree with the greased die.

Looks to me like a die trial strike on a very inferior planchet.

I thought the same thing but trials are so rare I didn't want to mention it. Parts of the coin are too well struck to be die trials. Look at the edge reeding numish, if they are well struck it's grease for sure but if they are weak & mushy it could be a trial or test and needs a second look.

The edge reeding looks normal. Supports the struck through grease theory.

Bummer. Oh well, still cool. JFK errors are rare and hard to find as compared to other denominations.

You're right Dog 97. Some of those high points are pretty well struck, and
if the reedings good then it must be struck-through.

  • Nice greaser! Biggest similar filled die coin I've found is an SBA, seem to get tougher as they get bigger.
